Greetings from WestOz.
On Anzac Day (holiday to commemorate our armed forces - April 25, a Friday this year) I went out for a long ride. Stopped for a banana. Set out again, but found the front derailleur was rubbing against the chain. Investigated to find the weld at the bottom of the seat tube had failed. Had to ring home to get my wife to come and collect me from 40km away.
The frame should be under warranty. So I went to the shop I bought it from. They are under new management, and the local company that used to import this French brand of bike has gone under. Leave it with them - they'll see what they can do. (Still haven't heard anything over two weeks later.):( It's also a bummer that I had recently had nearly $200 of repairs done, including replacing the bottom bracket. (And a couple of weeks earlier I had to replace the cranks after the right crank broke off near the axle on my way to work.)
The following Friday I finally settled a compensation claim arising from a serious bike accident 18 months ago, and a tidy sum is on its way - yeah, the cheque's in the mail.
The following day I went to my LBS and mentioned a figure a little under what I was prepared to spend. What could I buy? He found what he thought would be the best if I could stretch my budget a little - I could! - and I would be back when I had the money.
Because I've ridden with a group from this shop on Saturdays for over a year, it's clearly in the owner's interest to do well for me. Wouldn't look too good if a new bike from him failed! He also reduced the price from what was on the tag. In any case, over the last year, I've always found him completely helpful and reliable.
Wife however encouraged me to buy the bike the following Monday. So I am now the proud owner of a Raceline Giro, including Shimano WHR540 rims & hubs and carbon fibre forks. The ride is phenomenal - much less vibration and great acceleration. It's like the difference between a Toyota Corolla and a Mercedes (although the engine hasn't changed.;))
The best thing - apart from comments about "that's a serious bike out there" at work - was the sprint at the end of yesterday's group ride. Previously I would manage about 200m and then give up and hope I'd catch the main group at the next lights. Although I'll never be at the front of the sprint group, this time I kept up with them. It felt brilliant, and I was able to ride up to the LBS owner and let him know how good this new bike is.
Now just have to wait and see if the French come good on the frame guarantee.
Cheers
