This is probably pointed more toward the experts....I ride in an area that has many hills. I spend a lot of time out of the saddle pumping up hills. Is there a general rule for shifting or not shifting during these times. It does feel a bit wierd shifting while standing......thanks

Welcome to the forum msz.

While I don't fall into the expert calssification, not even close, shifting while standing is perfectly okay. I tend to back off the throttle a bit to remove excess tension from the drive train and make the shift smoother, other than that use em if you got em, gears that is.

I try and shift up 1 or 2 gears WHEN I transition from the saddle to the standing position. Practice this move, and it will become seamless, routine and easy to do. Then, if need be, I will shift while standing.

I try and take a bit of pressure off the drivetrain when I shift while out of the saddle. This allows for a smooth shift, and keeps my drivetrain happy. I've been able to get pretty smooth with a lot of practice.

Good luck! :)
