Hello.
I am a college student that is on a tight budget and am tryign to avoid a huge tab at a bike shop for assisting in a build. I have all components and such to build up a bike but not the technical exprtise of cable routing and crank install and etc. I am building a BMC Slt01 with campy group so I would need access to a campy bb tool. I am looking for some local help in the northern atlanta area and would appreciate any replies and hopefully I could meet someone this weekend. Thanks.

the best place to try would probably be sopo bike (http://www.sopobikes.org) co-op. knowledgeable people and they just ask for like $5/hr donation for tools. It's in East Atlanta and open on Saturday from 2 til whenever.

Hey Mike, I saw that you posted on the Sopo list which is the right place to start for volunteer help.

The list members are correct that you should get the bearing surfaces pressed in by a shop -- try Bicycle South first since their employee suggested the idea and often volunteers down at Sopo to help you with the rest of the build.

The rest of the build can easily be done at Sopo with their rag tag mix of tools.

Thansk for the replies. Actually I did not post on the Sopo "list" and am trying to find a link to what you are describing. I guess they are suggesting that I get the bearings pressed by a shop? Please let me know if I have to get this done before I go Sat. Thanks.

You want to get your headset and bottom bracket installed by a bike shop. If you are using a Campagnolo UT crankset you may want the shop to install that also. Other than that if you have a good idea of what you are doing SOPO is your friend.

I should also add that I volunteer at SOPO on Thursday nights and have very recently built up a bike for myself using 2007 campy.

Excuse me, you're right. Rachel, who heads up the Sopo project, posted your email to the group list. I think you can sign up for the email list at the Sopo website. http://www.sopobikes.org/

Yes, get the headset and bottom bracket installed before you show up on Saturday. If you could swing by there on Thursday night, Josh really knows his stuff on Campy parts and has helped me put together several bikes now.

As a hijack, why do you suggest getting a pro to install a UT crank? I'll be building up a frame shortly, and if anything, I thought the UT's were much easier to do-it-myself. Seemed pretty self-explanatory to me - what am I missing?

The installation is very easy, you just need to be sure the fixing screw is tightened correctly. I tried to use a long 8mm (think it's 8, might be 10) allen wrench but couldn't get it tight enough and had to take it to another shop that had the UT-BB110 tool. Basically you need the proper size allen bit that will fit on a ratchet that fits into the crank. It's easy, but the fixing screw has to be tight (42nm).

Okay thanks for the info. Unfortunately I will not have the time to take the frame to a shop and get the bb installed or the cranks. Will it not be possible to do this at Sopo on Sautrday? I am just looking to see if anyone will be available to help me do it as I wont have time to do anything before then. Thanks.

What crank/BB are you using? Let me know and I can check tonight if the co-op has the correct tools, if they got them it should not be a problem on Saturday.

I am using a chorus carbon crank 175mm and a record bb. I beleive the bb is record but it may be chorus. Thanks and I am pretty sure it is UT.

Also do you guys have like the tools for campy chains and such? Thanks

Record is the only UT BB, I'll see if we have the tool tonight. A standard park chain tool will work on a campy chain just fine, make sure the pin is straight on the tool and install the pin as per directions provided w/chain.

Okay thanks for the advice. I will just hope that you guys have the tool for the record bb. Do you think this could be built in one day? Thiings like the internal cable routing and such seem to trick me right now. Thanks.
