Mountain Biking - Whistler Mountain biking

Hey,

Can anybody tell me what the mountain bike is like in Whistler ?
Do they have all levels of trails ?

I was thinking of going there with a couple friends later this year and just wanted to get some info from somebody that has been.

Can you take your bike up on the Gondola or something ?

If you have any pics, that would be great!

Yeah ! Thanks. I saw that site...I was just hoping for some first hand experience stuff. Maelstrom, don't you live up in Whistler ?

It looks so great out today - I'm going to go out while it's still early and go for a long ride- try some stairs and stuff before all the cops start cruising around :-)

I did in fact post a pm to you justen but for everyone elses sake...

Its a mountain. There is going to be a lot of vertical. This is where having those hydros REALLY helps as your hand fatigue will be insignifigant compared to those with v's on this mountain. While I haven't been up Whistler Mountain most of the xc trails end up being dh / freeride trails and there are some locals trails that run up the side of the mountain that you need to come back down.

You have technical trails and jumping trails. Either case you are going down. Some things to get used to is near vertical rolldowns and/or drops to tranny (which can usually be rolled down). The terrain also changes quite a bit to from dead wood to slick rock to rainforest so it is quite a good time. Up in the park they have training areas and beginners runs to give ANYONE an idea of what the trails are like. You might want to find some dj's (www.nsmb.com and ask around there are a number on the shore) and get used to being in the air. Its not required but ads to the fun (I still have to do this too).

Keep working on the stairs as that will simulate some parts of the trail. Another thing to work on is small wheelies and rollups. Enough to get up over obstacles.

huh...Justen's from Vancouver...

You can take bikes on planes for free or a minimal fee depending on the airline. Dirtbike dude is the only one posting from Cali.

You also don't have to go up the mountain. While it is groomed and ready for dh we have more than enough trails in the valley to ride on in varrying degrees of difficulty. I could even tour you guys around if you needed someone to show you some of whistler's locals trails. :)..

oh ok ... the reason I asked is cause I'm in CA and Whistler sounds like a really kick ass trip in the summer.

ahh...yeah most airlines take bikes...a couple of Candian ones are free...not sure about the american flights in though...

whistler trails are plain and simply fat! It is a shame we had such a dry winter...the trails are so dry and in the most incredible shape! I have never seen so many trails ridable this early, before the spring maint. etc The mountain is still prob. a little sloppy, but it dries up and when it does there are trails down for every different style, difficulty. If i were to say when to come up here i would say end of this month, just cause not to many people come up so you can ride pretty casual, in the summer it gets busy!!! its like a train, and it is hard to stop/crash. its like 35 bucks can for the lift ticket and its about 75 percent open, they do alot of work on the trails and every year is better and different, this year they are expanding th trail system higher i think? i will get back to ya

I went up there once with my f/s magna when I first started to get into mountain biking... drool... Mael is probably the luckiest person here as far as to where to live. They have a lot of trails from easy things like riding around a lake to to flying down a ski run or weaving in and out of trees. I have no doubt you'll love it up there whatever your skill is.:D :D :beer:

Why thank you...Auger lives here too though. Quite a bit longer than me :)...

If its been a few years you should come take a look. Last year we had an increase of 40% on mountain visitors in the summer and many many more trails :)

Actually I came up about a year and a half ago, but I would still love to come up my cousin and I are wanting (dreaming) to do a little road trip up there:D. Hey, Mael do you snowboard or ski or anything like that, I was kinda curious what the snow was like this year if you guys had a drought of the white stuff like we did.:mad:

We had a draught in Jan feb...We had a killer Dec, March and april. No I do no winter sports :D

do you ride your bike in the snow? Do they let you bring your bike up on the chair lifts in the winter or is it just in the summer?

Just summer...and I do ride in the snow...but I can usually go to Squamish late in the season...

Are you familiar with the skatepark, empty pool and the little dirt jump track in whistler I think its kind of behind this gravel parking lot thats across the street from from a hotel? That thing is sweet, even better in the dark when you're not familiar with it. That was the first time that I went to a skate park and didn't even see one boarder or skater, let alone one trying to kick you out:D

Bmx jump park, flow park, balance park and of course the vert ramp and the pool and the street park...

Yep I see it everyday. It is pretty cool and very fun. All the skaters out here ride as well so no one hassles anyone. :) Definately sounds like you need a trip here soon :)

You dont do winter sports?????? You live on the doorstep of some of the best skiing in the world....:confused:

Haha...I get that response often...Don't forget I also live on the doorstep of 3 of the best mountain bike sites in North America. I just don't care for winter sports...this is going to sound ironic but its too expensive for what its worth to me. I might take up snowboarding next year but that all depends on what I do with my bike.

and Justen, one thing you may find about Whistler is that few things come without a price. A price which is not usually small. it's worth it though, I must say. (What about the the north shore? that's pretty gnar gnar too.)

our skate park is now lit up at night! and has had alot of work done to it! one of the best in north america! as for the dirt park well its pretty good. The mountain doesnt let you take the bikes up in the winter (bummer), as for maelstoms not riding a snowboard well... im gonna get his a$$ up there next year( he will probably forget about his bike) sounds like you havent been here in awhile mountaindew you should come see the changes! you will be surprised, words cannot describe the work that gets done to our trails,parks and mountain! the biking is getting out of hand almost, we dont even see to much of a slow period

Trever is a nice guy..haven't had a chance to buy anything from him with work being slow though.

The shore is very gnar :)...

i was in whistler 2 years ago in august and the mtb was great. the scenery is great, the rates cheap and the flyfishing was awesome (my first love)

i had not done any technical riding in 7 or 8 years but still had a blast

there are tons of cross country trails and plenty of bike paths all around the area...you can also ride up the main highway to a number of different parks

you can also buy a lift ticket and ride up the gondola and ride down the mountain on a variety of difficulty trails

i did not have gloves or a bike with a full suspension and found the ride down a bit rough to say the least...did not go down again

lots of places to rent bikes around whistler (of all price levels..if i did it again i would rent the best bike possible) and i did see a lot of people at the vancouver airport (mainly japanese and east coasters) bringing in their own bikes..not sure how that works today.
