What is a good sub $1000 bike with decent brakes? A lot of them have the Hayes sole which seem to be crap according to the reviews. I'll even take rim brakes if they are decent. In fact i almost would prefer them. Are the Shimano discs any good?

I got avid bb5's on my sub $1000 hardtail. Very happy with them so far. Easy to adjust, and stop my 200lbs frame no worries.

My Kona Caldera came with Hayes Nines. It was ~$700.

They were definitely better than the Soles I had on my Dawg, so I swapped them. I need them more on the FS bike.

+1 on the Kona Caldera.

I've ridden in all conditions on and off road and haven't had any problems. I haven't tried it, but I wouldn't be surprised if I could lock up the front tire on dry pavement if I really hammered on it.

Good solid wheelset, brake power determined by the rider, so simple to use, even a caveman can do it.

If you want rim brakes, you could look for something with Avid single digits - I dig mine, super easy to set up and tons of grab.
