What is your view on Bike lanes and what is your IQ?

I am fine with, but not a proponent for, BLs on fully intersectionless longer (0.5-1mi) stretches of 35mph+ posted roads with stripe ending 200' before any and all intersections unless intersection uses a RTOL. WOL everywhere else.

IQ I know not

I believe your IQ only indicates how well you take IQ tests.

So I abstain.

I don't know my IQ but the MENSA trial test said I had a Strong chance of passing the real thing so I suppose it is not too bad. Not that it matters really. It is not a country run by only smart people after all. Everyone has a right to an opinion whether well thought out or not. But I do think bike lanes are good in certain situations and probably crazy or a waste of money in others.

Someone on this sub-forum has a hypothesis that bike lane support is correlated with IQ in a certain range. I was just testing the hypothesis. But, really, there is no point. The poll itself suffers from a low IQ. Just a silly poll.

Probably not. In my experience, dumb people don't know how dumb they are. Ignorance truly is bliss.

I replied Yes, 111-120 IQ because I used to have an IQ above 120. But reading this poll and actually considering to vote and actually voting made me lose several points thus placing me below 120 which is in itself not really a bad score because Forrest Gump is below 80 points and you saw how well he did so I don't feel too bad about it.:p

Yeah, sorry about that. I should have put in a disclaimer. Participating in this poll will reduce your IQ by 4-7 points. Forrest Gump rules!!!

So far, I think this poll has demonstrated that most people are willing to lie about their IQ even in an annoymous poll.

1) I neither support nor oppose bicycle lanes.(So my IQ is irrelevant, I guess).

2) I believe every road should have a shoulder between the fog-line and the kerb (curb).

3) Moving over onto a road-shoulder to allow motor vehicles to pass is a courtesy, not a law .

4) I always wear a day-glow orange vest with strong-yellow-green reflective stripes, and I have a rear-view mirror on my bike. Some of my bikes have LED 'blinkies', and some have automotive twelve volt lights. Two of my bikes have reflective orange triangles, which mean "Danger: Slow Moving Vehicle".

Statistics show that 7 out of 11 cyclists who think their IQ is higher than 121 prefer bike lanes!
(translation- 7 out of 11 know it alls think that bike lanes are a good idea!) :)

I wish that the other thread hadn't disappeared on us. There was some boarish behavior, but HH's IQ/bike lane myth was thoroughly debunked. To review, it turns out that his argument looked like this:

Made up IQ number he believed in = Conclusion he believed in

It is a unique arguement because it is both circular and non sequitur at the same time. Any evidence he brought to the table was anecdotal and utterly disconnected from any IQ numbers. The IQ number was pulled out his arse and the connection between that IQ number and his "anecdotal evidence" was not made.

The circular part is the "I believe it, therefore, I believe it" aspect. The non sequitur part is the boarish behavior = "pro bike lane" => low IQ = "pro bike lane" argument (non sequitur because IQ has no bearing on whether a person is behaving boarishly or not).

In the end, HH had lowered the bar on his argument so far, that all one had to do to refute it completely was to say "this doesn't ring true for me."

But it will put hair on your chest! Or was it add valuable inches where most needed? I forget.

I agree, but do you think anyone is going to pick anything under 121 on either side in this poll?

I cannot vote, my IQ is below 80, but I've noticed that there are more BLs in the areas with hi-tech industry and universities. For example, in Nashville, TN I did not see a single BL; in Cupertino, CA, where people have masters degree on average, BLs are on every major road.

I feel the same as eubi and the last IQ test I took had me at 138. The test instructions did give a time limit, but did not say that you could get points for finishing far enough below that limit. I also took it while watching TV. (I still picked up a couple of points for speed).

Probably would have scored over 140 if I had been trying.

The only thing that was debunked in that thread was your claim that I even presented an argument.

But I can restate my original hyper-qualified surmising "wondering out loud" if you want.

Consider that most people have an IQ of 110 or lower.
That might have something to do with explaining why bike lanes have some of the popular support that they have.

That's it, more or less. What the gibberish above has to do with this, much less how it shows that my "wondering out loud" is somehow an argument (an argument concluding what exactly?), and how it debunks it, I have no idea.

There were a few posts about why I chose to wonder about 110 rather than 105 or 115, as if that was relevant to anything.

What Would Steve Jobs Do?
He'd ride a bicycle:

"... what is the last piece of technology that he [Steve Jobs] acquired – not made by Apple – that really delighted him? He [Steve Jobs] pauses for long seconds, looks down, puts his hands on his knees, looks away. “I actually bought a bicycle recently. It’s just … wonderful.”

My brother once told me that an IQ test was highly accurate in measuring your ability to take an IQ test.
He was a lot better at taking those test than I was...

Is there a poll option, "I do not support IQ tests"? ;)

Look at the numbers, everyone here is a genius?!

Either the vast majority of the people on this forum are Mensa members or I think that the responders have a very highly inflated idea of what their IQ is.

caveman tested at 140, but then got dumber. maybe. 32 ACT, 1400 SAT. good at trivial pursuit.

I like the benefits well designed bike facilties bring communities. I look at cities around the world that have facilitated populist expansions in bicyclist ADT and i see facilties are part and parcel of bringing more riders to ride on the roads.

i like bike facilties for the populist expansion they bring to bicycling in communities.

Caveman ride wherever.

I was 130, but I've killed a bunch of brain cells since then so who knows. I like Bike facilities and use them every day.

Does it count if the IQ test you took was on the Internet? I took a Meyer's Briggs on the Internet and got the same score as when I took it on paper.

I bet there's more correlation between your Meyer's Briggs score and whether you favor bike lanes or anti-cycling gurus.

methinks intelligent people can see the benefits bike facilities bring to communities, Diane.

Does this poll prove:

1. Most people lie about their IQ?

2. High IQ people are more likely to have strong opinions?

3. Low IQ people won't self-identify or take a poll that asks for their IQ?

4. That IQ testing is actually a big scam, and they tell everyone who takes the test that their IQ is above 120?

low IQ people don't use computers to incessantly surf the web looking at bike forums! except maybe HH ;)

BTW, i rarely vote in these polls- unless there's chocolate involved, I'm not voting!

I'm inclined to go with #4. Especially considering the environment in which I las took an IQ test and the amount of effort I put in I can not help but think the score was at least 10 points high.

I've never had my IQ tested officially. Unofficially, however, I've passed all my tests. After all, I'm still alive, eh?

Part of those tests includes knowing when to use bike lanes and when not to.

I should also mention I have the reflexes of a sabre fencer...
