IRO. Its still available on his site. I have one of his wheels, 135mm fix/fix on a Velocity Cliff Hanger rim. Indestructable.

Yes, but only the SS hubs come in pre-built wheels from QBP.

i asked IRO to make (or order) a 26" aeroheat rim laced to formula track hubs (100/120 spacing). this was about a year ago and set me back $185 for the set.

I'm riding an IRO and it's solid, only prebuilt wheel I've ridden that wasn't crap, which is probably because it was hand built.

On one makes a fixed hub. I think they sell built wheels as well. I'm looking for the same thing, but reluctant to pay out the nose for a wheel for my beater winter bike. I've been considering the bolt-on approach:

Wilderness Trail Bikes is a mtb component company, but they're old school, been around since the 80s - I think their first parts were hubs and wheels. They make some oem junk, but so does every made-in-taiwan/china rebrander (cane creek, avid, ritchey, bontrager, formula (whose hubs are really popular here, but they make almost exclusively oem junk)). I've never ridden the rims, but they're probably on the scale of a rhyno lite or similiar cheaper and slightly heavier but bombproof rim.

yeah if you can find an old cheap mtb front disc wheel somewhere and have some time to futz with it that might be the cheapest route!
there is a guy over on mtbr making some bolt on cogs cheap!
i have a front disc hub i got off ebay for under 10 bucks (shimano deore) that i wanna build into just such a wheel but on a 700c rim.

well, the front disc wheel idea sounds good, but it won't be spaced 135mm, and will probably throw the chainline off from the 52mm mark, right? i thought about getting formula hubs and putting on a longer axle, but i realized that would be 10mm i'd be off. same with that idea, though i love the bolt-on cog idea.
ieatrats, thanks for the info on wtb rims. i only knew them from small components. good to know what they are.
i'm a little reluctant to throw down a lot right now as this'll be a beater to get through the rest of winter (right now, it feels like it'll never end), something nicer after that.

You want a 135mm hub, and you like the bolt-on cog? Why not just go with a rear disc hub? No respacing, and no futzing with chainline (that you can't deal with via BB, anyways). Sounds like an ideal setup to me.

all right. i've only ever heard people mention using front disc wheels for this; i just assumed there was a reason no one ever mentioned using a rear wheel.

How much is it going to cost you? In parts, labor... etc.

surprised i didn't think to check on iro's site.
I just emailed Tony for a price on two "dark matters" wheelsets... one in 120mm and one in 135mm spacing.
I didn't think to ask him either.
If I read correctly, the "dark matters" rims are unlabeled velocity fusion rims. I hope it's true because I intended on getting them.
I need a set for both of my "new" rigs.
Maybe I can a deal on two wheelsets.
yo reel nashbar has the sun mammoth disc rims for cheap they are dh rims for heavyweights and they also have a ss disc rear hub that I built into a 27" I like the hub it is cheap and it is deimension I think ss cassett and disc fixed ont he other side email gene spicer about disc iso cogs and you are rockin and rollin build the front up like a mtb wheel with a disc hub and matching rim and get a fork and rock man(nycbikes has forks ont he cheaps)

disc front, fixed rear does indeed sound like the wintertime cycling jam.
i'd really like to use deep v's at some point, as the pair i have now have served me so well...i'm in awe of how bombproof they are. but rhynolites and sun mammoth have been recommended to me, both as "clydesdale" wheels...so maybe i should look into those (at 165 pounds, i'm sure they'll serve me well).
dimension disc hub? i'll look into it.
it may be cheaper to go surly/rhynolite for a bit, and switch over to deep v's further down the road.
keep in mind too that you can use 120mm hubs with longer axle and some spacers, Im pretty sure the formula hubs are almost long enough even in the 120mm size to just add spacers and put it in 135mm dropouts
I just measured mine, Ive got about 18mm's of extra axle showing outside the track nuts, so you probably wouldnt even need a new axle with formula hubs.

well, that all sounds well and good, but what about chainline? . how much of a hassle was it to get those extra 10mm?
extra 10mm is free, the axle is already long enough
chainline would be the same, its measured from center of frame outward........as long as the chainring doesnt hit the chainstay a normal 110 or 109mm BB should be good to go--(I think) the spacers are outside the cog so center to cog distance doesnt change
Im pretty sure this is exactly what IRO does with the jamie roy frame

so all you had to do was respace? no redishing?
that's my understanding, yes
I bought a pre-built wheel years ago to go in a mtb frame with 135mm dropouts and the chainline was the same as a trackbike-------you just have to be careful, many mtb frames dont have enough chainstay clearance to run a very big chainring and a short BB. If you dish the wheel and use a longer chainline, say like 52mm or so, then you will be stuck with a one sided hub too, no flip flop. Its a tradeoff you have to deal with unfortunately.

that hub I speak of has two chainlines the 53mmworks great with mtb for disc fixed and it being ss cassett with a disc ont he other side flip flop say????

My vote is for respacing a good old track hub. I've been pretty happy with this thing :
