I have a nephew that has reached the age that he needs a new bike and would like to have a least front suspension but would like dual. My sister and brother in law only have budgeted $200 for the purchase so I imagine that a dualie is out of the question.

Any input is appreciated.

Yep dualie is out of the question for $200. How large is your nephew? That would make a big difference. Does he want a MTB or a BMX style bike? Another consideration is how fast is he growing..

He's about 5'1" and about 85 lbs I think. He wants a MTB and I don't think he will be going very fast. He has the first born syndrome and is very careful.

5'1" he could fit a small 26 inch most likely, but would probably outgrow it in a year or so. I know I was 5'7" at 13 and that was were I stopped. Speciallized I know makes a 24" MTB for around $200, the seat tube on it is 10.5" if I remember correctly. So might fit him for a year. I normaly don't like x-mart style bikes, but for a growing kid they can be a good option, considering how fast he will outgrow it. Just don't go for the ones with full suspension etc, go for the basics. And have a LBS put it together properly.

I checked out specialized web site they have the 24" hotrock for $220, probably get it for a few less at a LBS. My main concern would just be how long would he fit that bike, if he is the youngest it could be passed along to the next sibling when he outgrows it.

That may just work. He is the oldest of 4 kids the youngest just turned 3. The bike could be used at least 8 years. I really appreciate your help! Thanks a whole bunch!

I'd recommend a BMX, more bike for the buck, I'm 5'6" and I ride one. A lot of High School kids ride them to school.

Advantages:
everythings bolted on, requires one lock to lock up
bulletproof durability
minimal maintenence
roll smoothly, good sidewalk bikes

Disadvantages
pedal standing up mostly
no suspension

I have both and the 20" wheel translates into a lower gear for hill climbing. At age 10 he shouldn't need a mountain bike for at least 6 years. If he has to have one I think Gary Fishers start at about $159 with walmart quality components but assembled correctly.
