General Cycling Discussion - Next time I'll keep my mouth shut!

Many of you will, or course, be aware of the excessive gloating I have been doing about my recent (i.e. the last 12 months) run of relatively few flats. Well, those who were awaiting my downfall can now crow in some satisfaction. One afternoon last week I decided I was sick of hitting the books, so I went for a ride, which ended up becoming a century. However on the way home when I hit Runaway Bay, I had three flats in the space of a kilometre, plus my pump decided to stop working. :cry: :cry: :cry:

Ultimately sheer bloody-mindedness got me through the ride. However, I can say that I have now been well and truly paid back (with interest). I won't be gloating anymore.

No more gloating about flats, riding in the road, good weather, etc.

You know full well it will come back to bite you in the @ss...

All right now, Chris. That's a lot of flats. Are you taking the same route every day, or is your route varied?

I was taking the same route for a while, and I started getting a lot of flats. I got 3 flats in like 2 weeks. For now, I've discontinued that route until I get stronger tires.

It had to happen soon or later. snicker.

If I was you, I'd do the following things.

1) Take the tires off and check them for wear, slits etc.. and replace if necessary.

2) Check the rim tape and make sure that nothing is lodged there and that none of the spokes are poking through a bit.

3) Switch the front and back tires if one looks more worn that the other.

on a friends bike we found a VERY tiny bit of metal in his tire just hardly pokeing out into the inside, the only way we found it was feeling the intire inside of the tire with our hands. you couldent even see it hardly. so look for things like that if you are getting a lot of flats for resons that seam unknown.

I tend to believe there is always a logical reason why things happen the way they do. There was a reason you didn't get flats before and there's a reason you've gotten so many lately.

Probably your stuck-up attitude.

I've already replaced the back tyre (where they all were) after the first three. It's unlikely to be the rim tape because all of them have been on the outside of the tube. Number four was caused by running over a nail (I really nailed that one!), I've no idea what caused number five yesterday, but I got through 166km ok since then.

How fun for you Chris.

I had a similar problem on a rear tyre, I had run over a tack and the "tack" part was still embedded in the rubber. It caused a slow leak, that had me baffled untill I ran my hand along the inside of the tyre looking for just such a problem.

Another cause could just be a run of bad tubes.

Number six. :( Should I put up a prize and start a competition to see who can get the most flats this month? Would that stop my flats?

I think so.
After my rant about the hemisphere armadillos the flat tire Goddess (I'm positive it's a she) gave me a reprieve.
Put on about 300 more miles and NO FLATS.
