As most everybody has heard, ConAgra is recalling a bunch of Peanut Butter that has been connected with a rash of salmonella cases. The lot # starts w/ 2111.

I have a giant container (Sam's Club-sized) of Peter Pan in the pantry. Sure enough, it has the lot # in question. The container is also half-consumed, with no perceptible ill-effects.

I'm jonesing for peanut butter. What should I do?

You should be fine, finish off the rest of the PB. If you haven't caught anything with 1-day of eating it, your particular container isn't tainted.

The issue isn't so black & white in yes/no terms, but rather shades of grey with numbers. Salmonella isn't deadly like e-coli. It takes a huge amount of organisms to affect you and the worse it'll do is give you a bad tummy-ache and some diahrea. Large doses that will cause actual harm will taste so foul, you won't eat it anyway.

I had food poisoning from said bacteria and i was out for two weeks, spouting out of both ends of my body. Your call. :D

Whats the better idea? 2.30$ for new peanut butter or hospital bills?

That sounds exciting. Makes the call easier to make: I will eat it down to about the last 1/2 inch, where the salmonella bugs have likely settled. Safety first.

Hm. I have a 2111 jar too. It's half empty. I feel fine.

+1. The wife was trying to save a few pennies. Now I have a jar full of salmonella. Someone's getting a punch in the stomach.

If I were you I'd stop in a Linens 'n Things and buy a whole bunch of shower curtains!

I don't like when taint touches my peanut butter.

I use Teddy Bear brand made over the border in Vermont.

I guess the guy with the 2003 expiration code on his PB is safe then, huh?

Pffft. Just make your own. A handful of roasted peanuts in a food processor - 20 seconds and you're done. Add some olive oil if it's too thick.

But if you haven't opened it yet.....CHECK the number!

We've got two jars of it, one is half gone. I remember making the kids pb&j sandwiches several weeks ago with it, but don't remember them being sick.

Salmonella or how ever you spell it would have taken effect by now (assuming you ate the half jar over a period of time and not in one sitting). I would see if you could get a replacement jar for free however.......not brain surgery here.......you would get a whole jar for free. Get it?!

Might be a bit gritty on such sensitive skin, but I bet the oils in it would help with chafing issues.

. . . just make sure you don't go near any hungry dogs.
