Hi...I will be new to FG riding. Thanks to a donated frame and wheels and the more than generous help of the LBS I should be on the new ride shortly. The old chain (from some unknown 10 speed) cheaned up real well and seems in good shape. I'm not sure if it is up to the job. Is it worth buying a more robust chain for this ride or just see how this goes?

10-speed chain on a frame with horizontal droupouts? A new chain is under $10.

Get a new chain. Under 10 bucks, completely worth not having a chain break as you try to avoid getting smashed by some ass who doesn't signal.

i think the OP refers to the old kind of ten speed (with ten speeds), not the new kind (with ten skinny cogs all in a big cassette).

Chain is one of the few parts of the bikes where going ghetto will almost assuredly bite you in the ass. Get a new chain, put it on right, keep it clean, and thank God you don't have to worry about derailleurs. :)
