I just did my first cross country mountain bike race today here in Bend, OR (the race was the Cascade ChainBreaker).
All i gotta say is im hooked! when i was a kid i use to race BMX but mountain bike racing is a lot more fun i think. I did the race on an old K2/proflex Animal (DH-bike) so it was a little funky climbing and stuff but still was good to me... i got 14th in my class (15-18 beginer) and there was 18 people in my class i think, so i didnt do to bad for my first 16 mile race :D

Im looking for a new bike beucase i want to do more racing and XC riding. Any one got any sugjestions? i was looking at the K2 Razorback, good or bad?

K2 Razorback seems like a really good bike for XC. It seemed really light and efficient. I was looking at it a few years back, and almost bought one but decided on a Rocky Mountain Element instead. I wouldn't really get the element if you're serious about racing, but the R.M. Instinct would be nice. Some other nice racing ready XC bikes I've ridden are Klein Palamino, Trek Fuel, Santa Cruz Superlight. Depends on what you're willing to spend I guess.

So it sounds like it was a good race! I wish I would have made it over to Bend... I know what you mean, after my first race I was hooked, although I signed myself up to race in the sport division, and should have raced beginner. Are there any other races you're planning on this year?

all right, you guys are making me miss Oregon...

anyway, congrats on the race.

i raced chainbreaker in '99 i think...

and yeah i know what you mean... i did my first xc race in '98 (Cougar Mtn XC - somewhere along i-5 south of Salem if i remeber right) and i was hooked...

as for a bike: my Specialized FSR XC is another good possiblity - but there are a lot of good bikes to choose from. but sadly all the full-suspensions that are light enough for XC racing are $2k+ so you could also think about a hardtail...

I know what you mean when you say 2k plus... good thing we still got hookups ;) our family use to own a Ski/Bike shop up in WA called the AlpineHut. there was 3 in and around the peuget sound area till we closed 3 years ago, so we still have good friends in the bike bizz :D so hopfully i can get somthing on pro-order with them.
