Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - slight bike decision dilemna.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
ok. so i don't actually own a fixed gear bicycle. the truth is out.
i'm going to buy my first fixed sorta soon. i was gonna get in on the iro group buy but eh.
i've ridden enough bikes to know what i like. i'm into sorta long rides/commuting/whatever other excuses i have for riding a bike.
here's my problem. there's a kinda cheap rush hour near me. the shop has a great lawaway deal where you can pay a bike off for like 3 months. the rush hour is cheap and i could see myself doing a lot of cool stuff with it. i like the frame and the ride is nice.
BUT, i went browsing at some shops up north a second and there's a very nice '05 pista concept sitting there going "buy me, kyle, i will make all of your wildest dreams come true". she's such a sex machine. she's on sale of course however a lot more than the rush hour.
basically i have no other place to type about things like this but here. i'm not looking for validation, just thoughts or insight.
does the concept hold up well for everyday or is it too fragile?
is the rush hour kinda junky in the long run?
etc etc etc.
tell me the rush hour is more reasonable.
tell me to just go all out and get the concept and **** the police.
tell me something.
feel free to ignore this as well.
thank you.
Are you going to lock it up? get the rush hour.
Can't afford to replace the concept? get the rush hour.
want to run brakes?(you should) get the rush hour.
Want everyone to know how much you spent? get the concept.
Want a smoother ride? get the rush hour.
Want more options for tires? get the rush hour.
Want a bike only for track use? get the concept.
Want to go on long rides? get the rush hour.
Don't want to deal with sew ups? get the rush hour.
Want to impress dip**** hipsters? get the concept, a 650c cf front wheel and 15cm riser bars.
Want something that will be reliable that you don't have to worry about? get the rush hour
oh, i was planning on a different wheelset for the concept anyway.
i appreciate the input.

I've heard the concept is also super stiff. Might not be a good first ride/commuter.

yea i heard the same. id say go with the cheaper 1st to see if you like fixed to begin with. then maybe later you can upgrade plus steel is better than aluminum for road use. yea def get rush hour. having a brake with help you out in long journeys
you cant post here unless you actually have a fixed gear sorry to break the news
get the rush hour and then come back here and post about your first ride
the concept is not what you want for long rides or for a first fixed
just think you can always buy more bikes later
in fact you are obligated to buy more later
get the pista concept then
also
what if you dont like riding fixed?
one, dont post here again
two, it would suck to have a new concept that you dont like
steel bikes are always a good frst choice and always much cheaper actually I got a mercier for my first a year ago and I have since upgraded everything including the badging on the frame my khs is made in the same factory and the same way as the mercier I love the frame and they are cheap... I wanted threadless hence the khs

I had the same dilemma but in slow motion...I bought a fuji track, upgraded it somewhat, and commuted on it + rode it for fun...then I was offered a screaming deal on a raleigh rush hour pro and had to bite. Most of my commuting / city riding is less than 20 miles so the stiffness and harshness isn't too big a deal.
I love the lightness and quickness of the bike, I don't ever leave it stealable (koW), and I drilled the fork to accept a front brake....so I guess I'm glad I traded up...though the fuji was really nice, hardy, and reliable.
i'll make it easy
the bianchi pista concept is a specialty bike
you are not special.
steel is better than aluminum for road use.
Wow gyeswho breaks out knowledge again. I just realized that your name is like a challenge to everyone to figure out whose fake account you are.

wow. you're awesome.
i've ridden fixed a whole bunch. i've never actually OWNED a fixie but i have enough experience with them.
anyway, ******* comments aside. i'm going for the rush hour because i like long rides enough for warrant a more relaxed geo plus i wouldn't be paranoid if i do lock up anywhere.
the concept is on the more fantastical side of things. i know i can ride and would have fun but function prevails.
plus a lot of this was a sort of vent because my girlfriend has had enough bike talk from me for a few life times.
also
what if you dont like riding fixed?
if i didn't like riding fixed i wouldn't consider dropping over a grand on a bike.
I have an al bike on the way but it wil probably end up a points bike strictly track

I love my Rush Hour more than anything ever in the world. It's stable, smooth, hot as hell and so light I feel like I'm riding on a cloud. So good. Even though you're going to trick it out, I've been riding it stock since I got it and I'm pretty pleased so far.

And I hope you really enjoy your Rush Hour.
For hipster points you can always just add a **** ton of One Less Car stickers.
good choice
ill be the first to welcome to bfssfg once you go pick up your rush hour

well, some say 50cm, others 53cm. but i rode around a 53 rush hour for a while and fit wonderfully.
update: i talked to my favorite bikestore guy at my favorite bikestore and they'll cut me a super deal on a rush hour and plus new pedals, etc. i'm very happy with it.
to be honest i knew i was getting the raleigh from the get go, i just wanted to get everyone's panties in a moist bunch by expressing my unrealistic want for something i don't really need.

do you like to pick on ppl to make yourself feel good? its a shame if you do but i understand cuz i was lik that too. to be honest it is fun doing (as i used to do this but not under the cover of the net) this but its a challenge also to take you seriously or respect you for being immature about things like this. why waste your time focusing on what i say and just respond to the op's ? i hope you learn you can really bother ppl doing that. im not affected but im just letting you know, have a good day and ride safely.

There are lots of ways of looking at this. My initial reaction is to shoot for the moon. There are three things in life that I buy the best I can afford: shoes, bikes and food. It all pays dividends in the end.
If you really want a concept (I know I do), buy it.
If it's not what you need, think otherwise.
Just don't put mag wheels on the f**ker.
You could just do a conversion.

I've had a rush hour for a year and a half now, and it's effing wonderful. the stock saddle gets uncomfortable after a while, but I didn't end up replacing it until I really started going on longer rides than my commute. The tektro brake hoods that come on it, at least the ones on the '06 model, were complete crap, the hex nut to adjust the tension on the clamps is inside the hoods behind the lever and underneath the cable. Oh, and it comes with 48/15 gearing.
Now that I've talked **** about my bike for a couple sentences, I really do actually love it, it handles nicely and has been very comfortable for 20 mile rides and a few alleycats.

The Rush Hours are pretty sweet! Put some pictures up once you get it.

Because most of what you say is uninformed and flat out wrong. The op is better served by having your ridiculous statements refuted then ignored. Also I highly suspect you are a fake account.
dutret is a real ball bster at times but he is a very respectable person I have found he mans up whne he is wrong about something and you should do the same I have found through your post history that you are just starting off with this whole bike thing so I would say give yourself a while before you start lending advice to people I have been a bike mechanic for years and have been riding bikes as long as I can remember and from what I can tell dutret has some wrenchig experience and alot of riding experience both of which you seem to lack
I am not taking sides but I am stating it is best to look stupid than open your mouth and prove it
dutret has a posse!!!
it has started.
and i agree with what retem said.
op- i hope whatever decision you make makes you happy. not that it hasn't been said yet, but the rush hour would be better for longer rides and more comfortable for daily riding. have fun with it.

i agree as with what you say as well but im just sayin don't shoot someone down because they are not as experienced as you are. i been ridin 6 mths now but that doesn't mean i dont know anything. my small penny of advice is just as valuable as your 99 cents because they are both advice to consider that's all. you can scrutinize me all you want but i wont stop posting advice if i think i can help a little even just a little.
btw duret im not angry at what you say but dont be so forgetful that at one time you were just as much of a novice as i am.

A fake account would be an account made by an established poster to troll and misinform often by taking ridiculous board cliches to their extreme for humor value. You seem like one that got out of hand with the series of threads you have made over the last month and suddenly offering bad and nontopical advice in other threads. Further, your choice of usernames screams fake since half the fun of fake accounts is guessing who is behind them. If you are not a fake so be it but until people who know you IRL can vouch for you I will be suspicious.

well i know im not a fake but very well then. i really dont care what you think of me. just take my word for it. i post "useless" ?s cuz i dont know. thats what these forums are for. i search but dont get what i want so i ask, big deal. why would i want to misinform ppl. you look at any thread and most will say steel rides better and the more relaxed geometry of the rush hour is better for what the op wants cuz he's a commuter type. how is this misinforming? you just want to feel good about knowing more then me i think thats all but keep doing what you do. i dont mind. i only have one username btw. you dont know what your talking about as far as me taking boards for humor purpose. what humors me is how i am trying to find info and ppl treat me like crap for asking and then in comes you thinkin im a phony but as i said it really doesn't bother me. im not going to try to convince you i just hope one day you see i am here to learn and not troll. trolling is thread highjacking. i give info that pertains to the topic; whether its valuable to who i give it to is for them to decide but im just tryin to be useful

yeah man some bmx track bike shiz is where its at in so cal rock and roll
but seriously rock the rush hour I have a couple friends who have em they are super nice and sturdy
really great bike for a first
a double century on a pista concept would robably leave you rattlin for a week man that frame is for the less than 50 miles a week crowd
the kids I know that ride concepts ride them to the hip bar or art opening and not on a daily basis the guys witht he rush hours ride them for a living 9-6 5or 6 days a week

yes i agree. rush hours are perfect for your style of riding
dude gyes all the ball busting is to feel you out and try and size you up and also on my end to push you to pursue knowledge of the things that you comment on thats all
this is all a learning experience(life)
keep riding man and keep learning
you look at any thread and most will say steel rides better and the more relaxed geometry of the rush hour is better for what the op wants cuz he's a commuter type. how is this misinforming?
please read threads regarding the characteristics of different alloys more carefully. There are indeed usually a bunch of sloganeering jackasses going off about steel but everyone who has a clue what they're talking about is very clear whether the alloy contains Al, steel, ti, scandium, beryllium or whatever is not what is important in determining ride. Tube shape and choice is. There are Al noodles and ti bikes stiffer then you probably want to ride you just have to form the tubes into the appropriate shape. AL is a great choice for a commuter or a **** weather trainer. Thick unbutted tubing can be used and will lead to a bike that is much more crash and rain proof then a steel bike of similar weight. Any stiffness issues can be overcome with slightly larger tires that will compress in the direction you want them too and not in other directions like a pencil thin steel frame. If an AL frame with the appropriate features was available to me when I built my new commuter/cross/rain bike I would have chosen it hands down.
If you are in fact a real person it's cool that you want to learn stuff just don't repeat platitudes and meaningless drivel you pick up as advice. There are plenty of people willing to spout those absurdities already. More importantly take everything you read on the internet with a grain of salt and don't go repeating it as fact until you are sure it it. That applies here as well as anywhere else.
yet again another good point I have a steel track bike with a 38mm rake fork on it it is a rather stiff and sometimes riveting ride to my hands
I have an aluminum track bike that is stiff as all get out but the fork is raked at 42mm making it nice to my hands -it has a steeper h/t angle to compensate for the raked fork -
