anyone here use aero bars for brevets? i tried them today on a bike i am very comfortable on. my position in the aerobars felt weird as it put more pressure on my perenium and left my legs feeling over stretched. I am not using them for speed purposes, but for the change in position/ability to rest my arms. any tips on succesfully adapting to aerobars? are they not useful for brevets (in your opinion)?
Aerobars do take a while to get used to, and may require some adjustments. You might try tipping them up a bit more. I used them during my first two years of randonneuring and they were nice for cycling through the Manitoba prairies, into headwinds.
However, the problems I see with them are:
-- they are useless in crosswinds
-- they are next to useless in mountains or tall hills
-- they are not recommended when cycling in groups
-- they are not allowed on the PBP (nor would they be much use there)
So that doesn't leave much time when they are of any use!
I took mine off at the end of 2002, and have never put them on again.
