I am fairly new to road cycling (I have less than 300 miles on my bike and its my first road bike: 06 Fuji Team)

Today, I decided to try out the SDBC Saturday ride which starts from UC Cyclery in La Jolla (2 miles from my house) every Saturday. I decided to ride with the "B" group 50 mile ride because even though I am pretty new to the sport, I am reasonably fast and in good shape so figured I could keep up. (The "A" group is for "current racers " and other fast folks and I didn't think that group would be for me; there is also a C++, C, C-, and beginners groups.)

Long story short, yes, I kept up just fine, got a good workout and would have liked to pull from the front a little more (but it was a really big group)...BUT, here is the funny thing....Within the first 10 minutes of the ride, at one of the early stoplights, I F'ING FELL OVER WHEN WE CAME TO A STOP in front of about 50 other "B" riders. Yes, I fell twice when I first got the bike a while ago, but haven't fallen again before today. Of course, my first time riding at this club event; I FELL!!! How embarrassing. I am really comfortable on the bike and it was a total fluke. Oh well; no one gave me any sh-t (even though I deserved it). The ride was alot of fun and I will be doing it again.

They're a pretty good bunch to ride with. I used to go down and do the A ride way back when I had just moved to Socal and my GF lived in SD. It's one of the more civilized big group rides as far as behaving in traffic and things.

ohsmily - I ride the Saturday SDBC ride as well. There are a couple of BF'ers that also participate in this ride as well (DaveYYZ for example).

I am usually in my SDBC kit and have a grey Trek 2100 with red bar tape and saddle. Most Saturdays I ride with the B group as well, but will hit the A ride when I am ramping up my training for a particular event. Introduce yourself the next time you ride in with us - always nice to meet a fellow BF rider.

BTW - If you ride long enough, everyone will eventiually have a funny not clipping out on time story.

Cheers – Garry

Ohsmiley, I fell over in my driveway the first time I mounted the bike and rode in a circle. I got up, burst into tears, kicked the bike (which just hurt my toe), and considered returning it. As long as YOU didn't behave like I did for just falling over trying to unclip, you're fine! We have all done it, and in front of others, etc. Congrats on your new road bike and for getting out there! :D
