I'm not sure if I want the bike you found DG, or this one. Sometimes it can be so difficult to choose between two bikes.

I thought you were worried about standover height.

Now I agree, the downtube shifters should be moved to the handlebar on this bike. :D

Yes, you are correct.

Buy them both Tom. Your find as a road bike and DG's as a mountain bike (at least you wouldn't have far to fall on DG's find).:D

But how can something with three wheels be a unicycle?

All I can say is it's mighty suspicious. First the red and white 1500 moves in with him, then he skips town for almost a week, then this thing...this half bike, half who knows what suddenly appears.

It's got people talking...that's for sure. :o

Why, it's PERFECT!!! I hope you ordered one! :D

On a different note, however, and I'm afraid it's a serious one, I'm going to have to report you for that offensive avatar. Or at least make a citizen's Arrest. Unless you have the DNA to back up those claims, Buster, I'll see you in court.

I have found yet another. If I remembere, you like flat bars, right? I don't know what you're waiting for, Tom.

Tom Bombadil

Actually, I don't like flat bars, nor do I know why anyone else does. I think they must have been designed to numb people's hands for surgery.

I'm a Fred, I like riser bars that sweep back a bit for a more natural hand position.

Besides, that's a monkey bike.

Thus it is intended for Jet Travis.

I like flatbars. My hands are never numb.

Tom Bombadil

Numb hands on flat bars are very common. Flat bars really aren't a good ergonomic design for a (long-distance) bicycle, although a lot of people can deal with them. My Trek 820 mountain bike has handlebars that are very close to a flat bar. I put a set of long bar ends, the kind that have a long slanted top, on it and when I ride it, I usually have my hands on the tops of the bar ends. I don't get just hand numbness from flat bars, I experience a good deal of hand pain when using them. I'd swap out the 820's flat'ish bar if I was going to ride it for long distances. But as it is a 1 to 5 mile lunch ride bike, I can deal with them for that long.

My bent has many of the things I like in a bike. High swept back handlebars, low standover, forward placed bottom bracket but still below my seating position. wide & cushy seat, ability to put my feet on the ground while sitting on the seat, back support, suspension, medium-width (1.5") tires for handling graveled trails, mountain bike gearing for easier hill climbing, and a great view of my surroundings while riding.

While I'm entertaining the idea of a road bike, they aren't that appealing to me because they aren't that comfortable and I don't ride on roads - except to ride 3/4ths of a mile across my subdivision to get to a rail trail. And sometimes about the same distance from my office, down 25 mph streets, to get to a park & zoo.

What I'll probably end up doing is scan Craigslist, local bike ads, and Goodwill stores to see if an inexpensive old Mixte shows up, and if it does, pick it up to just play around with it some. I have zero interest in going on a 20 mile road ride.

REJECTED!!!

That is a woman's town bike.

What I would be tempted by is a mixte road bike. The handlebars on the bike you just found are the higher, swept back type that I tend to prefer. But you see, I've already got some of those. I would be looking for drop bars so I could try those out now and then.

The mixte frames have the dual slanted top tubes coming down from the head to the rear wheel hub, one on each side of the seat tube. They were originally designed as women's bikes, but over the years have become accepted as unisex (or even hybrid) designs. So there is a smidgen of social acceptance for men to ride them.

Now on a new bike, I like bikes along the lines of the Trek Pilot 1.2

It is a "comfort road bike" wherein one rides in a more upright position than a typical road bike. The top tube slants down to allow a lower standover. The stem is angled up a bit so that the handlebar sits almost horizontal from the seat, where it would normally be 2"-3" down from there. It has a triple crank, to give one something close to a granny gear. And has 700x28 tires for a more comfortable ride.

Some of these even have adjustable stems (I believe the Giant OCR 2 and Schwinn SS DBX do) so that you have the option of bringing the handlebars up even further than shown in this picture.

The pic of the Trek Pilot 1.2 shows the geometry well:

DG,

You know your "crazy" bike nominations make about as much sense as me buying a road bike. When I stop and think about how much I would ride a road bike in a year, I come up with an estimate of 200-300 miles. Now in two years when they pave the unfinished trail between my country subdivision and Madison, then I might use one more. But for now, it makes very little sense for me to go out and buy a nice road bike.

While bikes like a Trek Pilot or Giant OCR look and feel nice, and when they are on closeouts at big discounts they offer a tempation to buy one, it would be an irrational thing to buy one.

So maybe I should buy a Monkey Bike or mutant Unicycle!

But if you had one, you might find that your estimate was WAY off.

That is always possible, but I would be surprised. If anything, I think the odds are higher that I would ride it less than 200-300 miles a year than more. I already own 4 bikes. My two primary recreational bikes are going to be my bent and my Trek hybrid. At lunch I'll ride my Trek 820. Given that I don't like riding on roads with cars, that doesn't leave much opportunity to ride a road bike. To get to 240 miles means I would have to take twenty 12-mile rides. I don't think I'd do that.

It would not surprise me in the least if I put less than 100 miles on a road bike.

What I should do it wait until it warms up around here, like sometime in May, and rent a road bike for a day. Then ride it around Madison's paved city bike paths for a few hours, see what I think of the experience. So far in a half-dozen 15 minute or so test rides, I couldn't wait to get off of them. In two cases, I didn't even make it 15 minutes before I had to get off, due to the pain levels in my hands.

Well, DG, I did find a bike like I've been looking for. Unfortunately, it is in Minneapolis. That's a 275 mile drive. Too far for a bike that isn't that special. But if it were within 50 miles of me, I'd probably have already bought it.
