Mountain Biking - My "new to me" specialized hardrock!

Just got this bike off craigslist from a very very nice guy,
now I feel guilty for talking him from $375 to $350.. :(
it's really nice to ride, and I feel proud of it.

some minor scratches, brought it to lbs right after taking it over,
all is fine, bike is running great! bought a bell venture helmet :)
but I'm not sure about the frame size, and I think the paddles are not stock? any idea?

Looks like a excellent deal indeed.

Large is a 19", yours is much larger than that.

I'd say XL(21") or XXL(23").

id say xl 21 inch as it looks about same size as my commuter and way bigger than my 17 inch hardrock

is there any maintanence or check point I should carry out or inspect after than checking the tyres before and after riding?

Yeah. There is a good chance that bike is too big for you, considering the seat height. Either that or you have the seat too low.

I'm almost 178cm "only", around 5"10' / 5"11'.
the bike is slightly too tall I think, but I hv no problem controlling,
I can stand on one side with my toe.
and I'm not yet 19yo, so I think I'm still growing (I hope)! :D

In that case I have some bad news, that bike is definitely too big for you. The bad part is fit is the most important part of any bike. It doesn't matter how good of a price you got on it, if it doesn't fit you it wasn't a good deal. :(

For what it's worth I'm your height and I typically ride an 18" frame.

erm, a stupid question again,

how does the size of the bike actually affects the rider?
or how does the size of the rider affects the bike?
is it dangerous to ride an oversized bike? or is it only about performance?
would it be ok if I can handle it and balance it well?


I remember when I was a kid, I rode my cousins cannondale and "seven"
they are really tall for me at that time, but once I get it rolling
I rode away at ease.

Make sure the chain stays oiled (you'll hear it if it's not), that the wheels are reasonably true, and that the cables (brakes and deraileurs) aren't fraying. Takes all of thirty seconds.

Edit: When you oil the chain, make sure you do it before a ride so it gets a chance to spread itself over the cogs and chainrings, and work it's way into the chain itself.

If the bike is too big it is harder to handle. It will also have you more stretched out, will make it harder to get the proper distance for your seat height in regards to pedalling. It will also cause you to have minimal standover height which could be a bad thing when you come off of the bike unexpectedly. It will cause you to be out of balance on your descents, it will have a negative impact on your climbing as well.

Basicly, too big of a bike can cause you to enjoy the sport much less than you would if you were riding a bike that fit properly. It is a general rule that it is better to ride a bike that is too small than one that is too large.
