This question comes at the behest of my wife:o
Recently, I've learned that I really like soy milk. I drink the no sugar added varieties (I have diabetes) in chocolate and vanilla. I'm probably drinking 1-2 cups per day on average.
However, my wife (who is keenly aware and quick to point out these things) has noticed an apparent and rather unpleasant side effect of drinking soy milk on a regular basis which is that of rather rank flatulence.
1. Has anyone else noticed this, or is it just me?
2. If so, does anyone know if something like Beano helps?:o
Well, soy milk does come from soy BEANS, and we all know what those do...
Have you by any chance increased your meat intake lately? I've found that when I eat less meat, or eat lower quantities of meat, I tend not to have nearly as much gas. Otherwise, it probably is the milk. It might help you to try other brands, my soy milk has done nothing of the sort, but then neither has any other brand.
It does not effect me that way.

I don't eat very much meat and haven't changed my intake. I did read that some producers of soy milk take some extra steps to remove the 'gas causing components', so maybe trying another brand would be worth a shot.

Both soybean and peanut products affect me this way. Soy milk, tofu, or any soy product not fermented really bother me. I cannot eat peanut butter without an inordinate amount of gas, either. I switched to almond milk and almond butter.

I find Beano works well for certain things, like dishes with beans in them, or burritos - things that aren't necessarily a "staple" item. It doesn't work so well when you are consuming a lot of something, like soymilk. Also, for some reason, Beano works better in general on legumes other than soybeans or peanuts, at least for me.

Check out this article about soy:

It's really interesting how a lot of health-conscious people are switching to soy. According to this article, soy has high levels of estrogen and has been linked to breast cancer in women

30 years ago there were a couple of health faddists who thought soy was practically a miracle drug. Now we have some people who think the opposite.
They are both full of it.
Everything you eat has hormones, poisons, all kinds of stuff. Brocoli has hormones, along with naturally occurring pesticides and insecticides. Poisons...
Your body learned to deal with a few million years ago.
Some people will have allergies, and missing enzymes, and will run into trouble
with a food product. On rare occasions, a person will lack the ability to adapt to the prescence of certain compunds in a particular food. Usually if that happens, you know, like the person that has a massive allergic reaction to lobster.
I am not a vegetarian, and while most days I have a cup or two of soy milk... depending on it for a major part of your diet is not something I would recommend. You can have too much of a good thing.
But as a person who has been using soy for decades (that's nothing, the Japanese have been using it forever) I find it's elevation to threat amusing.

The Japanese/Asians haven't been using soy as a food crop forever. They have been using soy as a nitrogen fixing crop in rotation with other crops for a long time but they have only been using soy as a food crop for the last 500 years when they learn't to FERMENT it. Traditional fermentation proccesses are critical to soy being a food crop that's suitable for human consumption and even then they don't eat as much of it as some people like to make out. Asians do NOT make a habit of consuming western, non-fermented soy foods and asian soy milk is a different product to western soy milk.

Yup. I've got a couple more reasons besides gas for limiting my soy consumption. First, I've not had a thyroid for 15 years, and any period in my life where I've eaten a lot of soy, my TSH, and free & total T4 levels do not stay stable. Secondly, I have endometriosis. Higher levels of estrogen are associated with increased pain. Soy is a phytoestrogen, so your body believes there is more estrogen running around than there actually is. I will say that when I finally restricted the soy consumption for good (along with some other things), my pain went down a notch. Less pain plus nice and even thyroid labs is good enough for me.
Yeah, I would never reccomend that you have a lot of soymilk. Or regular milk, for that matter. More than a couple cups a day tends to make me very tired, not sleepy, but too tired to do anything.
