In May I am riding Pittsburgh to DC. Returning via Amtrak with 2 bikes. Amtrak says I will need to buy bike boxes. Does bike fit in without taking apart? Or drop right in? Please help, thanks.

You'll probably need to remove the pedals and turn the bars sideways - but otherwise, it'll roll right in. Amtrak's boxes are HUGE.

I used Amtrak to travel with my bike from Boston to Springfield, MA. Had to turn the handlebars sideways and remove the pedals. Rolled the bike into the box, box got checked into baggage and there were no problems. Unlike planes, the baggage compartments for Amtrak are pretty sparse and empty, so there's not much to worry about with other bags or cartons damaging your bike.
When I arrived at Springfield, I negotiated with the red cap there to have my box stored over the weekend -- which was pretty nice.
Also, if you haven't taken your pedals off before, you might want to take them off once the night before, then screw them back on. Just loosens them a bit so that they don't feel seized up when you're frantically trying to remove your pedals 15 minutes before your train leaves.
