After yesterdays fiasco of a ride I set out this morning planning to head to SART and back (50 miles round trip) only to have my chain go into my spokes while riding through Sunset Beach. It scared the hell out of me, but I managed to get it out, but broke a couple spokes. By releasing the rear brake and taking off the pads I was able to limp home, slowly. Beats walking or hopping on the bus I guess.

I may need to start looking for a decent, small dork disk to put on to avoid this in the future.

Nah!

Not a good riding weekend for me.

Not good & sorry to hear that.........now, let's talk about why the chain jumped over the large cog so you can prevent it from happening again without the need for you to install a dork disc.

I understand that a properly tuned bike should never have this happen, but I will never take off my dork disc.

My condolences, devil.

People call me a dork all the time... so I think I'll keep my dork disk.

Yes, lack of preventative maintenance would seem to be the problem as I haven't adjusted the RD in a thousand miles. I suppose the fall yesterday could have had an effect on it also, even though I fell on the non-drive side of the bike. I should have given the bike a more thorough check last night.

After taking a closer look I'm going to need to replace all the outboard spokes on that side, but I think I have some on hand. If not the Centurion's been done for a couple of weeks and I can always ride it tomorrow if the weather's decent.

Now if that's not a reason to buy a new bike, what is??
lets see, some spokes... $10, a new bike $3-10K.
No brainer, the bike it is...

It's funny because I was just watching the video of the 86 Paris Roubaix where LeMond is knocked out because his rear derraileur goes into his spokes.

At least I have only myself to blame and not a full time mechanic. Not that Roubaix wouldn't knock even a well maintained bike out of wack.

As for the new bike, where would I find a brand new one with downtube friction shifters? ;)

I picked up an 86 Serotta yesterday that was about as close to new as a 20+ year bike can be and it had friction downtube shifters. Super Record to be exact.

What dereailleur are you running that was either mis-adjusted or got out of adjustment that caused the chain to go into the spokes?

(yes, I had to brag a bit, I'm just a bit happy about my new ride)

That's why I have a stealth dork disc! Black and barely bigger than the largest cog of my cassette!

I finally got the wheel rebuilt, trued and dished. I also spent a while adjusting the dereailleurs and everything seems fine now.

Still no dork disk.
