Leaders are those who are following their own internal vision. They follow this vision despite the fact that perhaps the majority of their peers are taking a different route. Through their commitment and persistance, these people eventually become the "seed" for reproducing their vision (or a similar form of it) in others who follow their inspiration.
Bicycle commuters, at least in many more technologically developed countries, are modern leaders in the fight against
unnecessary pollution, destruction of natural ecosystems (through paving), the plagues of heart disease and other diseases related to physical inactivity, and a host of other problems which come out of a unbalanced, consumeristic society
that cannot be sustained in its present form, nor can it be duplicated at its present level of intensity on a worldwide scale.
