Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Whats with the facial hair in fixed gear riding?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Been seeing a large percentage of fixed gear riders sporting facial hair, whats going on there? I can only think that it keeps ur face warm in teh winter?

i would suppose that it is because fixed gear riders are primarily mammals

unlike roadies who are typically amphibians or reptiles

or commuters who tend to be birds

Nope.

Just like you can't kill bottle cage threads in the roadie forum.

Winter is my main impetus for bushy pubic hair.

Why would you even venture to click on that forum? I'm thinking of trimming my goatee down to give me a Willy Wonka look. That wouldn't make me a hipster, would it?

are you really surprised? we're too lazy to work on gears so what makes you think we would put the effort into shaving?

just made a transaction with a forum member and will be part of the powergrip crowd very soon. i seriously doubt i'm going to feel less secure and the front of my shoes won't get destroyed in a month.

the girl unit (she signed up yesterday as humangirl and has yet to post) has powergrips on her bike. i took it for a brief spin one time (it's 9-10cm too small for the ride not to be brief) to check out some funny stuff that was going on with her wheels...anyway, to get to the point...the powergrips felt fine, and i want to put them on a bike i'm pulling together for a long-term test. i think i'd like 'em in the long haul.

i don't think my facial hair is really a bike culture-induced choice, it's more of a laziness issue.
i ran out of razorheads a few weeks ago and the only one i have left is so dull it's not gonna cut through the jungle on my face.

If you think fixed gear riders have facial hair, take a look at telemark skiers, our brothers and sisters in using equipment that actually makes the activity harder.
75% of tele skiers must have facial hair... its uncanny. At least in the east. (I for one don't, but thats only cause I don't have the ability.)

'Cause no one's ever really worn beards. Just like we're the avant-garde of bicycle riding, so are we on the historical forefront of facial stylings...

Gordo789

This is further proof that people here are "avant-garde" in the ways of being unoriginal.

Instead of asking a question that is pretty much rubbish, go for a bike ride. Maybe you can find a read a book. Try making a birdhouse.

Do something useful. When you realize that asking questions of no worth really produces nothing but a hint of grandiloquent rantings that are often completely wrong, it will be immensly freeing.

Maybe you should join a cowboy bandit forum and ask them how they feel about all the kids on fixed gear bikes wearing bandanas.
Just sayin'...

Its quite simple really. Its a matter of physics. The longer the beard, the lower the center of gravity--esp. if you have those beady things in it---lower center of gravity = longer, more stable trackstands. QED--beards are good.
