Touring - Flying JFK to Boston?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Just wondering if anyone has flown JFK to Boston lately?
I've a direct flight Bangkok to JFK, but haven't sorted out the JFK to Boston bit. Tried to through a travel agent in Laos, but they were going to charge a simply obscene amount. From what I can gather the commuter flights are pretty cheap, but can they handle a bike as luggage?
Part B: I was hoping to not box my bike. I haven't had to yet this trip, including 4 overseas flights so far.
Any info would be very helpfull. Likely will not have internet access for a few days, untill Hoi An.
Thanks, and cheers from Hue` Vietnam!

Part B: I was hoping to not box my bike. Dream on. They won't take it unless it's boxed. They won't guarantee it unless it's in a travel case instead of a box.

There is a bus Co. outta Chinatown that runs every hour on the hour from 7:00am to 11:00 pm...$15 bucks one way, they will load your bike underneath in the cargo holds(Tho be careful, load it yourself they won't cover damage),I just can't remember the name!! I use it when I'm in N.Y. and wanna get to Boston.Goes right into South Station.Any New Yorkers Know the name? Its 5:30 am and I'm kinda brain dead at the moment.Hope this helps.

I've taken that exact bus, never with a bike though. It's called Fung Wah.

fung wah, lucky star, there may be others and peter pan/greyhound are also pretty cheap- under $30
the acela amtrak train is about $100 and pretty fast
Hadn't thought about the Chinatown bus (have heard of them before though).
How to get from JFK to Chinatown? ie how much would a cab/minivan cost?
I've ruled out Amtrack simply because of the "hastles" with the bike.
Thanks!

Thats IT!! quick note...grab a old blanket and a couple of plastic zip ties, zip tie the wheels to the frame, wrap the bike in the blanket, makes it smaller and keeps it from getting scratched/damaged as easiely. If you can arrive early enough ride to Chinatown Its been a few years, but if I remember right you can cross over into Manhattan on the Williamsburg Bridge,I just can't tell you how to get from JFK to the bridge, any NY'ers help here?
Cycling to the bus is most likely out. I've something like a 16hour flight ffrom BKK, then customs etc. Too long of a day I think. Might be an option, but one I'd have to leave untill I get there to see how I feal.

Far and away the best option is to take the subway! We are bicycle friendly here.
To keep things simply, you can take the A-train (runs express) directly from JFK to the canal street station in Chinatown. Or, to get you closer and just about as quickly, you can take the A train to Jay Street Borough Hall and transfer to the uptown F, then get out at East Broadway, which will drop you very close to where the buses leave. If you have any questions feel free. The bus will take you 5 hours.

i'm guessing a cab will be like $20-30? the cheap buses pick you up on canal st in chinatown in nyc..and they don't give a f what you bring- i'm guessing your bike will already be in a box/case, so just put it in the hold yourself, and don't let people put too much junk on it..lots of people take the chinatown bus with just their bike in the hold, without any box or anything. they drop you off at so. station in boston.
here are the links to the 3 nyc-boston chinatown buses:

there's also greyhound and peterpan, and maybe a couple others, they should be cheap too, but not $15 cheap
ps. the cheap chinatown buses do have a penchant for catching on fire/flipping/breaking down..so...
for serious!

A cab is convenient, but I think for JFK to Chinatown the A-train could be faster and a lot cheaper.

oh, i totally agree. i was just adressing and guessing what the cost of a cab would be.
mass transit for the win!
Wow thanks Neezy/Golden for the info! Will definitely do the subway should I go the bus route.
-I might still change my ticket for a BKK-LA-Boston one if the price diff isn't much. BUt again you're info is super appreciated.

Delta has 45 minute flights from JFK to Boston all day long.
Delta has 45 minute flights from JFK to Boston all day long.
Right, as do a few others (?Comm Air etc). And they're pretty cheap online (40$ ish).
My original question was can they handle a bike as luggage?
The Comm Air planes are 50 seaters, and might not be able to handle a bike (I'd imagine).
Hence, was wondering if anyone had done JFK to BOS lately. It's pretty inconvenient for me to call around from here.
Thanks & Cheers from Hoi An Vietnam!

I've done the trip from JFK to Boston lately, but I didn't bring an oversized box with me. I'd send them an email to find out how much extra they are going to charge. Tell them the dimensions and weight of the box.

Most likely $90-$100 and for a short trip like this, the equipment may be too small for the bike to arrive with you.
