Training & Nutrition - IBS & cycling

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

A serious subject (for once:)) I'm just curious . . . is there anybody else out there who suffers from IBS (irritable bowel syndrome?) If so, drop me a line sometime. I have been in and out of hospitals almost constantly during the last six months, since I was diagnosed with it. And of course, the GI doctor I've been seeing says to quit cycling, or at least to quit cycling so much. Now that I'm on the right medication, it seems to me that cycling is helping my recovery, rather than hindering it. So if there's anyone out there who knows about IBS and the pros and cons of cycling with it, I'd like to hear from you.
Thanks--

Strange.... because regular excercise is considered a mainstay of IBS treatment along with sensible eating patterns, especially constipation dominant IBS but may also help with diarrhea dominant IBS.
This seems to be more important in women, which suffer from this affliction by a 2:1 ratio vs. men.
Go by how your body feels. If it is doing better with the cycling,by all means continue.
It might be encouraging to know that there is nothing in the literature searches I preformed that suggests excercise has any adverse effect on IBS. Many of the studies showed a positive effect. He may have meant not to kill yourself and get dehydrated etc. since that is a stress to your whole system in general.

Thanks, cb. Yeah--I have the diarrhea-dominant pattern, but thanks to this new Rx (finally), I'm seeing some light at the end of a long tunnel. After trying 2-3 prescriptions, I'm now on belladonna (surprise--a VERY old drug), but it's working. And it's such a relief, after having had things shoved down my throat and up my butt to find out what was wrong.:( Also, not having to make so many stops while riding is way, way cool;) However, I'm still not at the place where I can eat WHILE riding yet (damn), so I'm having to keep it under 25 miles a day right now.
Anyhow, thanks for the info--I appreciate it.
