quick question: is 'metallic finish' the same as a 'flake finish'?

nope. one has a sheen to it, the other looks like it got doused in glitter.

Not all glossy paints are metallic. Metallics and flakes have reflective material inside the paint. The difference is in the size of this material. Metallics have lots of tiny pieces (dots), Flake has fewer but larger pieces. You can apply metallics in as few coats as a non-metallic, which is one reason you see metallics on lots of cars, but not flake.
