Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Two questions about bags

1) when will the truck tarp liner stop 'bleeding' on my stuff? I got a red liner, and all the edges and corners of the books I've carried are now red. :mad:

2) I want to sew on some patches, do some embroidery, or whatever strikes my fancy in the future, but how do you do it without peircing the liner that's intended to keep the bag waterproof?

edit: *an unrelated question* I heard Red Bull came out w/ a new energy drink named "cocaine", it's supposedly like five or ten time stronger than regular RB :eek: I still haven't seen it around here yet. Has anyone tried it? Where can I get some?

Red Bull doesn't make Cocaine. Apparently it is quite nasty as well. Also, your bag sounds sucky.

I can throw some embroidery on there. I can take the flap apart for you and do some stuff and put it back together. Just a thought.

Liner material shouldn't bleed colour on anything. I like mid-weight vinyl: (15-18oz) makes the best (IMO) liners if you're paying for materials. If you're scavenging, then vinyl banner material is the easiest to come by and strongest, and won't bleed colour on anything.
What's your bag lined with; dyed canvas duc?

chrome metropolis, industry standard truck tarp liner. To clarify, it's not staining my shirts or anything huge like that, but the corners of my books do have a pink hue to them now.

I have a red liner and have never had this happen. Maybe it's your lipstick?

If you're gonna sew anything on to the flap you're stuck with either a curved needle or taking the flap apart at the edge to separate the layers.

Ok, here's a pic of a book that was in the bag for about 4 hours. Not awful, but definitely unexpected. Might be a reason to avoid bright colors like red or blue for liner material?

shouldn't have got a chrome and there is no industry standard I like cordura liners personally

oh really? Let's see, who uses tarp liners? UTW, Banjo Brothers, Timbuk2, Bailey Works, Chrome, R.E.load, Bagaboo, off the top of my head. While not unanimous it sounds pretty much like an industry standard.

I have Chrome with a red liner, and I never had that happen. I'd contact them and see what's up - sounds like they might have got some ****ed up tarp.
Also, it's pretty obvious where the codura stops and the tarp begins - as long as you don't pierce the tarp, you should be fine.

I've had a chrome for a year and a half now, and I can't wait to have the extra bucks to replace it. shallow bags are a terrible idea.

PVC is what most use however there are many, many different producers & quality grades

for patches, just pull the cordua outer layer up and away from the tarp inner, and sew away. A curved upholstery needle is best.

If you want embroidery, best to embroider on another bit of fabric, and then sew it onto the bag. or take up the seagull bag guy's offer.

Besides any functionality or price issues of Chrome, everybody and their dog has one. Like the Pista.

This is what I did, with a little care you don't need a curved needle. I used a 1 less car patch, and put some machine "hemming" stitching (I'm sure there is a proper term for this) around it to stop the fraying before I attached it.
