Recumbent - Bent tandem teams riding OOP

I'd be interested in hearing from teams riding recumbent tandem who are riding OOP. We are still riding IP. We can not stand on the hills, obviously, and so we must spin. Any other recumbent tandem teams care to offer us any suggestions?

So please, what does "OOP" and "IP" stand for? And can you please post a picture?

Normally, IP stands for Independent Pedaling, but in conjunction with OOP, I'd take a S.W.A.G. and say maybe In Phase or Out Of Phase? There might not be very many bent tandem riders here to answer the question, even if I guessed right.

You guessed correctly! IP is in phase with both cranks at 12 o'clcok at the same time in the rotation, and OOP is out of phase with one set of cranks 90 degrees forward, usually the captain's, from the other set of cranks. Sorry about the confusion, but I really thought someone on the bent forum might also be a tandem rider. I've posted the same question on the tandem forum, where the topic is discussed frequently, but only as it applies to DF (diamond frames) bikes. Regret that I do not have a picture that would make my query any clearer.

I have a bike-e recubent tandem and prefer to ride it SOOP:D (slightly out of phase) Starting from a dead stop seems easier if you are closer to being in phase, especially if it's hilly. I set up the rebumbent tandem to match my other tandem, a KHS tandemania comp sold by Nashbar. It really doesn't seem to make that much difference, especially on the recumbent.

We run our Greenspeed OOP so that it doesn't exert (sp?) too much pressure on the 3x7 rear hub.
I've heard they are prone to calamity when used on a tandem.
