Looking for some help here. I am thinking about getting a new cross frame and swaping out a bunch of my 9 speed dura ace parts off my road bike. I am looking at the redline conquest team frame. Can I run my dura ace crankset on this frame or do I need a compact crankset. I would change the rings out to something like a 48-39.
Also I have a `03 Kona JTS and am wondering how the Easton ultra light tubing compares to the scandium on the redline.
Thanks a bunch!

Frame: Yup, there should be no problem running your current drivetrain.
AL vs Scandium: I own a scandium bike (Salsa Las Cruces), and I can't really tell the difference between it and an AL bike. The "scandium" frame is really mostly AL, with only a small part being scandium. The bottom line is that, all other things being equal, a scandium and AL frame will be nearly identical.

I can't directly speak for the Team frame, but I just bought and built a Pro frame with Ultegra 10 and it works fine. THey have the same geometry and everything, so you shouldn't have a problem. I have a 48" and with my race wheels it comes in just under 18 pounds. I too thought about buying the Team frame, but couldn't really justify the additional $300. If you get a good price on it though, definitely consider it. The scandium/WCS fork/paint job all sounded appealing to me. Keep us posted.
Your crankset may not work actually. You'll have to check the BCD (bolt circle diameter) on the rings you want to replace. Road bikes it should be 130. The cross specific cranksets I've owned had 110 BCD's. Besides, your crankset gets pretty beat up in cross. You might be better off selling your DA crankset and BB, and getting a cross specific, or compact, crankset. IT probably won't cost you anything.
Scandium is great. The advantages are basically that it allows for a lighter frameset, and generally it's not as jarring and stiff as aluminum. The weight advantage will help, but you are talking about a cross bike, so don't expect it to make your next cross race any less jarring or comfortable. :D
thanks for all the info. It looks like I can get FSA rings with 130 BCD down to a 38 tooth. 1 of the frames I am considering will only work with 36 tooth or smaller due the chainstay shape. So for that I would need a compact crankset.

BCD has nothing to do with cyclocross nor is there really such a thing as "cross specific" when it comes to cranksets except in the minds of some marketing departments and consumers in internet forums.
have a look at a few of these bikes:

notice how many are using total Dura-ace groups? Draw your own conclusion.
I think it must be a design "feature" of the one bike that I was considering that it wouldnt take anything bigger than a 36...

How are the Salsa frames? They look pretty cool, at least as good as the 2007 Redlines, but are they worth the asking price?
