Bicycle Mechanics - Got a new frame, knicked BB shell (detailed pics)

I just got this frame today used. It is in GREAT condition except 1 thing, the bottom bracket shell has some knicks/scuff on the drive side. It looks like at some point, someone was an idiot that was installing/removing the BB. I have just simply sanded some marks on the shell on my old bike, but i do NOT want to mess up this frame at all. How would you guys make sure you end up with a perfect outter surface? How can I make sure it will be perfectly flush with my hollowtech bearing cup?

An estimate for chasing and facing the bottom bracket would be around $45. Probably a bit less if you don't want the threads chased, though it would be worth doing while they're in there. Facing that shell will be a good idea, since the surfaces aren't uniformly flat right now, and that could possibly cause your bottom bracket cup/lockring not to go in perfectly straight and flat. It would depend largely on whether the flange of the cup overlaps the disturbed area. You could try it first, and if it doesn't cause a problem, there's not a structural reason to get it done.

I sure hope the guy who sold it to you disclosed this before you purchased it. I would definitley seek reimbursement for that.

Actually he didnt mention it which kinda pisses me off...

Its not TOO big a deal though because its in perfect condition other than that.

You know, I didn't take into account that you already have the frame ready to be worked on. Since a shop won't have to disassemble the bottom bracket to do the facing, it may be quite a bit less expensive than I said.

Yeah, I ride with 1 guy and know the others at my local shop so hopefully they will hook it up.


Heres another question I might be able to get answered without having to start another thread:

Is there any easy way to test if a frame is bent? This thing looks ok to me, but I would like to be 100%. Is there a certain alignment/measurment I can do?

Have the bike shop do it at the same time as the facing. They'll likely have a tool called the Park ***

i wouldn't worry about the nicks but definately clean the threads before you put the new bb in.

And yes, im gonna clean those thread real nice first. Its a bunch of nasty grease and rust tint from the old bottom bracket in there now.

nice frame (other than your BB woes - sorry to hear that), is that what Specialized called the "BigHit" frame.... I've never seen one with a gas shock or with the reservoir chamber mounted so far away.

Its an 04' S-Works Enduro. Its the only year they came with the 'Brain' shock as far as I know...

I think the Big-Hit comes with a coil shock. (Vanilla R maybe..?)

you can't really face a BB shell without chasing the threads, at least not with the park tool. with the park tool, you have to put the thread chasing tool on one side and thread it in. this is to make sure that the BB shell face is lined up properly in relation to the threading, and also to make sure that both BB faces are parallel. my shop charges about $50 for chasing/facing threads.

When we face B/B all that is needed is that 80-90% be faced.

On a brighter note. even with those ugly looking nicks... Just used a Cartridge B/B. For you won't need to even worry about that!!!. In the old days when the spindle had to line up with loose bearings. You would need to have it fixed. But a Cartridge is already one unit in it's self. Just have the threads gone over and you'll be fine :)

I finally made the switch to hollowtech (Saint dbl) and I doubt Ill go back. The design just makes so much more sense. :)

IF it where mine, and IF I wanted to do it myself, on the cheep. I would take a black magic marker and darken the whole flat surface of the BB shell. Then I would take a good, fine to med. toothed flat file and file those scuffs flat. The threads don't seem to be buggered up. Just my thoughts on the matter.

That's what I'd do too... just concentrate in the high spots. No worries with the low ones.
