Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Replacing Raliegh BB w/ Cottered cranks

I have had numerous problems with my early 60s late 50s Robin Hood convert that all relate to the cranks and bottom bracket. I saw the DIY article on how to replace/ repack the BB but how does this pertain to my older 26 tpi frame? Please school me in english BBs and what replacement BBs are suggested. Thanks.?

Yer basically screwed. Just keep using the same cups and spindle if you can, and if you must, find a replacement spindle that works with your cups. The cups are the key.

If your cups die, then I'd look into the YST threadless BB. It's a last resort type of thing, but it works well.

I just dealt with the same issue on a nottingham raleigh and I used the YST threadless BB...I have only ridden it about 4 miles so far so I can't really say too much about it at this point.....some may say that you have to have the frame chamfered for the BB to sit correctly but I just filed the inside of the BB shell to an angle and it seems to work so far

your other options include getting phil wood cups but I think the cups alone are like 35.....I got my YST for 17 shipped i think

Thank you, i will search right now for a YST. I was really hopping to toss the whole cottered bussiness and got for 2 or 3 cranks. I hace already read almost every crank, bb , and raleigh artcicle form sheldon b and have found them very useful. I can remove the bb no problem, but i dont know what i am looking for in a new bb except that it uses 26 tpi. Thanks freinds.

^ Maybe you should re-read the article. It tells you who still makes 26 tpi BB and several different options to convert from 26.

Decide on what cranks you are gonna use and then you can figure out a spindle length to get a good chainline. You might have to buy the cups separate from the spindle.

the other issue with the raleigh BBs is that the BB shell is wider than 68mm like modern it is closer to 70-71mm I had to file down the exterior of the BB(in addition to filing the chamfer) for the YST to fit

even if you do decide to get phil wood cups(only place I know of to get 26tpi cups) you might have some trouble finding a spindle that will fit properly

I had that issue with an old concord. English threads, but a 70mm BB shell. Ended up having to buy two BBs. One for the cups (english) and one for the spindle (italian). Works great. Found a shimano NOS 105 for the spindle $5 and an old YST for the cups. The whole thing ended up costing sub $25.
