Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - XC wheelset that is both strong and light for a 250 lb rider

I have no idea of where to start on a wheelset. I want something that is strong, but doesn't weigh down my bike. I would like the best bang for my buck and not spend more than $500.

Call Mike Garcia (http://www.oddsandendos.com) and tell him what you are looking for.

I have two sets of rims for my Trek 6500, the stocks are fitted with a Hutchinson Top SLick 26 x 1 for city use, and Sun Rhyno Lites for off road fitted with a Panracer Fire Xc Pro 1.98.

Doubt they are light enough for you, but you can't beat the price on the Sun's - $99.99 at Performance, and I think there is a 10% coupon code out now.

The wheelset you described is basically the wheelset that I am looking to upgrade. Thanks for the advice anyway.

Jolowe86, I bought a set of Velocity Aeroheads (28f/28r) from Mike Garcia recently for $414 shipped to my door. They weigh in at 1493g for both. I weigh right around 230lbs and he guarantees his work if he suggests a wheel for you. He built them with his Speedcific hubs and I've had no complaints thus far. He could probably build you some 28f/32r for about the same money and just over 1500g if you want something more bomb proof. Another option (or in my case, a spare set of wheels) would be the Mavic Open Pros with Ultegra hubs from Performance Bike for ~$200 and I think they weigh in at around 1900g; everyone says they are definitely bomb proof.

I ordered a set of Neuvation M 28 Aero's (http://www.neuvationcycling.com) on closeout sale for $229.00.

They are on closeout because of the release of the M 28 Aero 2's.

I am 6'1" and 270, right now.

I had heard good things and a friend I trust suggest them.

After corresponding with the owner, John Neugent, I was convinced by the information about their tester, Big Mark - 6'5" and 250, found here - http://neuvationcycling.com/teams/teams.html - scroll down.
