General Cycling Discussion - If you don't want to carry a cable or U-lock...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

For keeping your bike from being ridden away for short periods of time get a small padlock in your seat/tool bag and when you leave your bike, lock the chain to a spoke on the back wheel. This will prevent anyone from riding the bike, while it only makes you carry a little padlock. You still need to watch out if you think the front wheel could get stolen or the bike could be carried away by someone without you seeing.

I never thought about that. That actually seems like a reasonable idea. A stand alone idea or can augment an existing security system.

Keep in mind that someone could just toss the bike in a car or pickup and drive off. For most of my commuting I carry one of the small light Krypton seat saver cables and a padlock just in case I need to stop somewhere for a few minutes. It won't stop a determined thief, but I can lock the bike to something to keep it from being carried away. If I am pretty sure I will be stopping somewhere for a more extended time I carry a heavy cable.

Thats called "free locking".....I do it all the time while working, stick U-lock around seat stays and thru spokes and lean bike against a bldg, temporary but relatively safe....doubt someone will carry my 32lb SS very far like that.
