Fifty Plus (50+) - A really nice surprise today

I didn't get to attend the cycling club's banquet last week as I was in Florida watching my nephew's high school team win their 4th state wrestling championship. I received an email from the club today indicating they were sorry I missed the ceremony and my "Rookie of the Year" award would be mailed to me:)

I'm not a rookie at cycling but this is my first year with the club. It's been a good year, too. My first century and my first 2000+ miles for a year. I was afraid I would get an award for the most flat tires on a club ride. I had 5 in 25 miles on a ride this year due to a faulty rim:(

I'm looking forward to another good year if it ever gets warm and dry enough to ride outdoors!

Congratulations! That sounds like a good group/club if they're doing recognition like that.

Congrats to the family on the Wrestling championship as well. High School sports are really fun to follow, especially if you have family or close friends on the teams. Performing well at the Regional and State levels requires special talent and a lot of heart and desire.

That is indeed a nice surprise. Three good things in one day (Nephew's success, in Florida instead of Ohio during Feb., and a great e-mail recognizing your accomplishments). I'd have a grin from ear to ear if I were you!

Congrats to you. As some have mentioned, the club you are in sounds pretty nice to recognize various achievements. Keep going!

Thankfully I didn't have to repair all those flats. I can do it but I'm a little slow. One of the club members was a fantastic help that day. I still thank him everytime I see him.

I'm going to do my first 7 day tour this summer. I'm also going to do another Livestrong ride in Philadelphia. They promise Lance will be there this year:)

My advice is to get to be a pro at changing flats, then change everyone else's every chance you get. Every cyclist has to change so many flats in their lifetime, and the more you change for others, the fewer you have to change for yourself. The advantage is that you're not so emotionally involved with other's flats.

I'm a volunteer bike patrolman for the local part district so I get plenty of chances to change flat tires, fix chains that have slipped off, etc. We carry extra tubes with us as this is the most common problem we run across. It's amazing how many people leave home without the equipment to fix a minor problem. I'll probably never be fast at changing a flat and it's becoming harder each year due to arthritis in my fingers:(
