I do.
I was asked to fill in for someone, in my friends pool league tonight. After he asked if I wanted to join the league because a couple of guys dropped out. I told him no. I know if I joined, I'd be buying new pool cues, and spending all kinds of money practicing... It would be like cycling, and my golf league, and hiking and my ridiculous beer brewing hobby... I just can't casually participate in things, I need to buy every possible accessory, and spend every free minute online reading about it.
Well, I'm off to Ebay to check out pool cues.

There are a good many hobbies that possess truly "black hole-like" qualities in terms of sapping a person's time and resources.

Bicycling is one of them .

If it's something I'm interested in, I do. When I started cycling, I spent every free moment reading up on it online. When I wanted to start shooting, samething. Now I'm getting into hiking and such and the last few nights I've been up way too late reading everything I possibly can find about wilderness survival, hiking, etc. I go out and buy books, accesories, equipment and what not. I'm able to stop myself before I go nuts; thank God.

I've had to learn to be really careful about what I get involved with because I go overboard with everything I do. I seem to think I have unlimited funds and time way too often.

50/50

I start getting way into something....but then try to hold myself back as best I can. My latest is coffee....I recently bought a $120 (normally $140) coffee grinder because it was the cheapest conical burr grinder I could find that would go as fine as Turkish grind. Now I'm trying to force myself not to buy the (cheap) $400 espresso machine I have my eye on.

Bikes...I got really into them and spent a ton...but now I have what I need and try not to go nuts anymore.

my ridiculous beer brewing hobby...

Brewing isn't a crazy hobby, it's a survival skill!

. . . . at least that's what the little voices in my head keep telling me. They also tend to butt in when I've got a boil going, throwing off any hope of following a recipe with shouts of "HOPS! MOOOOOOOORE HOPS!"

And yeah, obsessed 100% here. Beer, coffee, tea, hiking, biking, bonsai, fish tanks . . . whatever it is, once my foot's in the door there's no stopping.

Dude, just splurge a bit more and you could have a Silvia! (http://www.wholelattelove.com/Rancilio/silvia.cfm) King of the "ceap" enthusiast machines. :D

I try not to obsess about anything, but I do find that I am able to get quite worked up over a few different things: Raw food, kombucha, belly dancing, and exploring the outdoors. I wouldn't call myself obsessive about it though...I am just passionate. :)

I've ridden my bikes nearly every day for the last 3.5 years, in temperatures from 109F to -5 F. I've ridden almost 25,000 miles. When i get home from a ride i spend a good deal of my time on a website called bikeforums.net. I also spend a lot of time on ebay looking at bike stuff, as well as the time i spend reading bike repair manuals, and magazines.

A lot of my friends and colleagues think i am obsessed with cycling. But I don't think so. I really don't get obsessed with stuff.

My buddy spent so much time playing pool, he bought a full size table. The pool hall actually called him, after a month, asking if he was ok. Thanks to him I have a graphite pool cue, and looking at upgrading to something in the 90 buck range. I have also noticed I can't play on quarter tables or tables without speed felt.

You're obsessive, and in denial.

I'm like that with computers...and always have.

When I was 4, and my dad bought the first computer he ever owned...I wanted on it badly....real bad. Once I was allowed on it, I wanted to learn how to get it to do what I want, not what was on those disks....so I convinced my dad to get his co-worker to give him an BASIC suite to program with.

Now, I'm even worse...I design my own appliances based on computers. Network Attatched Storage is my next one...but with a twist, I want the option to logon to it through VNC, then download things directly to it via it's own internal browser. The project will costme approx $100 for the hardware, and consume my 200GB and one of my 400GB hard drives from my desktop....which is a good thing, this behemoth needs all the power it can get....dual 8800 videocards and an additional 2GB of ram are it's next upgrades.

Some people own sueprcars, I have a computer that is for all intents and pruperses overkill, even for gamers.

Played in a BCA pool league for 2 years. If you have any obsessive tendancies you will definitely spend a lot of money. You have listed new equipment (cues, etc) & practice time, however don't forget about the drinks you will consume while playing. It's inevitable.

I used to be the kind of guy who had to be the BEST at anything that I got into. I've learned to control it and now satisfy myself with mere competence. ;)

Yeah, me too. It takes awhile to learn that there is always going to be somebody better regardless of what you do. Competition brings out the worst in me.

I don't really obsess over anything. I have never have been that way. I don't know why. I guess it is a good thing.

I'm a shooter and I reload ammo. I spend more time picking up spent brass at the range and sorting it at home than I do shooting.

That is one reason I never took up golf. I know I'll get hooked. I decline every invitation. Golf can be very expensive.

SO is biking
You can't compare bicycling to golf; you don't have to pay a fee every time you go bicycling (unless all you do are charity rides).

Jeez, now I'm obsessed with this thread.....:o

I'm an obsessor (<- actual word?) i've heard that obsessive personalities need something to obsess about. it's like there's a grinder in the back of their brain that is always turning and it needs stuff to chew on. if obsessive people don't get something to obsess about they can get kinda nutty. usually whenever i get a moment where i don't have to concentrate on something, i think about what parts i want for my bike, if there are better parts and if it's worth getting those, do i really need the parts i want or is it just a want, if it's just a want is it worth the cost, where am i gonna go on my next day ride, next night ride, gotta find the source of that tiny little rattle i started hearing lately etc... etc...

However when im actually biking my brain just goes "wheeeee!"

I agree with the OP 100%. Everything I've got into, ends up all-or-none. I have a hard time being 'just kinda into' something. However, I usually end up trading hobbies off for something else. Like a previous poster, I was big into computers... which tapered off when I got big into cars... which tapered off when I got married, haha, then I got into fish tanks (which I still have), and last year cycling started. I think I drop the older hobbies because I put everything I have into the 'new thing' leaving little time/resources for the previous things. I think I also like the change/challenge of something new, and will not let myself fail at it. I'd like to keep consistent with cycling though. Computers age, cars run out of parts to change, fish tanks get setup and stable, but cycling can be brand new everyday - just take a new road!
