That is so sad. It sounds like she had found her peace and sense of place in Olympia.

RIP, amanda.

Ferrell was struck about 6 p.m. Thursday by a car travelling in the same direction as her bike. A State Patrol sergeant said Thursday that he thinks Ferrell was struck as she attempted to make a left turn into the Blue Heron Bakery.
The driver of the car was not speeding or otherwise at fault and will not be cited, State Patrol Sgt. Tom Martin said Thursday. Martin said he does not think Ferrell was wearing a helmet, and her bike did not have a light.

My condolences to the family and friends of Amanda Ferrell.

6 pm is just a few minutes after sunset.

My condolences to the family and friends of Amanda Ferrell.

6 pm is just a few minutes after sunset.

Now why did you have throw the "6 pm is just a few minutes after sunset" comment in there?
As if we ALL don't already know this. Trying to hint at something... start a debate over another cyclists death even?
I was starting to give you the benefit of the doubt.

Another cyclist down, what a shame. :(

I didn't read that. I read, that is the most dangerous time of the day so take EXTRA precaution.

Sucks to hear about another rider going down. Dang.

My heart and prayers go out to Amanda's friends and family.

Sad. I went to school there in the 80s. Olympia seems like it continues to have great people. I loved Oly and still have many found memories of Evergreen.

And if he was, your taking the bait hook line and sinker certainly will not help. I urge both of you (ore anyone) to not pursue this in this thread.

Please, no arguing or finger pointing. Discussion and condolences are what this cyclist deserves.

My condolences to those who loved her; it is a very sad event.

I'm a little confused about the collision. Does anyone know the road where this happened? Did she merge in front of faster traffic to make the left (out of a WOL/BL/shoulder)? Or was the following vehicle attempting to pass on her left when she turned left in front of them?

Condolences to the friends and family. :(

It is unfortunate that posts of this sort often seem to deteriorate over a confusion of their purpose on this board. Are they memorials, or are they incident analyses? Obviously, some see them as one, some as the other, and many just go along with either direction. But to the extent that the analysis often comes off as insensitive, especially when some cyclist fault is indicated, those two purposes are often not compatible.

Maybe the solution is to create a Memorial sticky thread, where we can post notices of cyclist deaths, purely for purposes of letting people know about them, and for replies of a condolences nature. No analysis would be allowed on that thread! The flip side of that would be that new threads posted about specific incidents would be more intentionally about analyzing what happened, with the understanding that if you aren't interested in doing that, you don't need to participate.

Can I get a second?

That's a good idea, John. I'm taking notes. :)

Good idea... call this a "second."

Read the link.

Amanda Ferrell had personal challenges, she was schizophrenic. Amanda may not have had the capacity to make sound judgement calls about personal safety. Despite this, it sounds like she led a good life in Olympia, and loved to ride her bike. Her bicycle liberated her from public transit or relying on people to drive her around.

My condolences to her family and friends.
RIP, Amanda.

The one downside I see to a Memorials thread, from an advocacy point of view, is that it does somewhat feed the perception of cycling as a dangerous activity. However, having all of these separate threads is already doing that too, so maybe it's not much worse. And the benefit hopefully provided by separating out the discussion from the condolences might be worth it.

I live about 1200 miles south of Olympia Washington. I had no idea when sunset was up there this time of year, wondered about it, looked it up, and shared the information with whoever else might be curious about the relevance of the comment in the article about the cyclist not having a light.
