Hi from NorthEast Ohio. Bought this excellent example Schwinn Peloton ...serial # 5E07724
Can anybody give me information as to the year and other particulars?
Are the wheels(Suntour Superbe Pro hubs with Record Cromo rims) considered nice?
It is in such nice shape that I could simply re-install all the stock parts and have a totally original bike. The other thought would be to upgrade the components and save the original parts. My only concern being I would have to cold set the frame...126mm vs. 130mm rear spacing. Would this make the frame unrestorable in the future? Thanks

Nice Schwinn, if you post the numbers that are inscribed on the head badge I am sure someone can tell you the the year. If you don't mind me asking, what did you pay for it?

Personally, I don't see how removing a complete Superbe group and putting anything else on the bike would improve matters. I don't ride Suntour myself, but I'm sure there are regular contributors to this forum who will probably claim in posts after mine that there has never been a better component group made, before or since. My vote: keep this one all original, and if you want a bike with a modern 9-speed group, go buy a new bike.

I remember when those parts were new! The Superbe grouppos is nice! I raced a Cannondale MTB bike in the late 80's with Superbe XC.

The #s inscribed on the head badge are 0865. Did not notice those...thanks for the headsup. As far as what I payed...I also picked up a Specialized Rockhopper Comp(SeaGreen/1 1/8" headset/Mantua Spyder forks...does anyone know the year?) that was super clean along with some various extra components and gloves ETC.
$ 421.00 including the Peloton . Any Idea on what the Peloton is worth? How about the wheels?

This is a superb bike, one of the best in an era of excellent bikes. I would not change a thing. Just new tires and a tune-up.

Most 2007 wheels should fit into your rear hub without any problem, just pushing the hub down will spread the dropouts enough for a good fit. One of the many advantages of 1985ish era shifters is that they work well with any cog set made between 1907 and 2007. Your shifters will work as well with nine or ten cogs as with five or six cogs. But, the original wheels are terrific wheels. Newer wheels would not be an upgrade.

It's an '85 by the headbadge. I'd take Bob Hufford's and Alan's advice; don't change a thing.

That is a really nice bike. You would be gaining so little going from a seven speed to a nine and the cost to do so (brifters, wheels, cranks, draileurs) would be pretty high. If you do not like the down tube shifters (assuming it has them) you can pick up a pair of Suntour seven speed bar end shifters, often in New Old Stock on E-bay pretty inexpensively.
Grease her up, put on some new cables and enjoy the ride.
