Model 49 is a copy of the TA cycletourist. This is not a 49. I have a 49 on a Motobecane Grand Jubilee I plan to restore with TA parts. Note at the axle area there are no screws to hold the chainrings, therefore it is not a 49. Too bad, since a 49 can use TA parts (Thanks, Sheldon..)

49's had the TA-like bolts right by the crankarm. 93's did not. This is a 93. At least it looks exactly like everything that was advertised as a 93 back in the 1970's.

Which of the two is higher end? This bike is an astra (motobecane grand record copy?) that I picked up on ebay for $26. Claims 531 tubing forks and stays with nervex lugs...

The 93 was higher-end. It tended to be on "racing" models.

At any rate, for some retro pricing, I looked up the 1974 Big Wheel, Ltd. catalog (http://www.wooljersey.com/gallery/v/broderir/Catalogs-Posters/Wholesale-Retail-Catalogs/Big-Wheel-1974/?g2_page=1) on Wool Jersey. The TA Cyclotouriste crankset (similar to the Stronglight 49D) sold for $49.95, which included a bottom bracket. The Stronglight 93 was $59.95 alone. The Nervar was $49.95 alone. And the Campagnolo Record was $104.45.

I believe they were. I purchased my Moto GT around 1972 and it had a Stronglight 49 on it. The PX-10 at the time had the 93, as did my LeJeune Champ du Monde which I believe dates from 1972. I cannot be 100% sure about the date on the LeJeune as I bought it used.

I can't vouch for which was introduced first (I'd guess the 49, but that's a guess) or whether Stronglight came out with both at about the same time, but I am certain that they were both being spec'd on new bikes during the early to mid '70's "Bike Boom" years. My sense was that the 93 was introduced to compete with Campy's Nuovo Record, but I'll be dipped if I can recall what info led me to think that. Hey, it's hard to remember all the details - maybe because of some of the other things that were being introduced around then . . . . :rolleyes:

They have no protectve coating of any kind on them, so they can be polished up nicely.

The 49D chainset was launched about 1937, the 93 in the early 70s. The 49D and 93 both went on into the 1980s. TA's 5-pin chainsets were similar to the Stronglight 49D but came later. TA's first chainset called the Criterium featured an odd crank/bottom bracket axle fitting with a wedge and axle ends with two flats and a half circle. This came out about 1960. The later 5pin chainset with conventional square tapers came three or four years later...
