Foo - Anyone giving up anything for Lent?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

This past weekend I figured my drinking is getting way out of hand. I had a New Year's resolution to only drink on "special occasions", however I threw around the adjective "special" quite liberally.

Anyway, this past weekend I realized that whenever I find a "special" occasion I would take the opportunity to catch up to all the other opportunities I had missed to get drunk by drinking much more in excess. I made an ass of myself and possibly lost the opportunity to get with a girl whom I love and admire dearly.

Anyway, I'm giving up alcohol for the Lenten season (which includes St. Patrick's Day, oof)

Don't get me wrong, I'd still be down to party, just sober.

Wish me luck!

Go me.

I have not given up alcohol for Lent. I've just given it up for today. As it turns out, I've given it up just for a day 2978 days in a row. One day at a time. That's what has worked for me.

Good luck!

I guess we won't see anybody giving up bikeforums for Lent.
This thread reminds me that it is time to hear a few friends state that they are giving up sex for lent.

Good luck! I'd be surprised if you don't also notice an improvement in your sleep paralysis.

Actually, the last time I posted about my sleep paralysis was the last time I had it.

I ALMOST had another episode the following night, but I woke myself up before it happened again :)

I was going to stop making fun of people who are religious.

I'm eastern orthodox, so every year Lent is the same: the first week I don't eat meat (this year started on Feb 12), the next monday I can't eat any animal products (cheese, milk, eggs, etc), so it's a vegan diet till Easter. It's no big hardship for me, but if I don't watch out it can interfere with my bike commuting, especially by the end of it.

In my case it's more than just a religious sacrifice. The season also offers the opportunity for me or anyone to better oneself. A "Jihad," if you will* :)

Thanks for the support

*Jihad in its original Arabic meaning is a "struggle towards good"

I'm going to try getting less headshots.

Maybe some arm shots, or some leg shots, maybe I don't always have to get the headshot, you know?

I'm kinda surprised to see how many practicing catholics are out there.

I love Lent because I can not eat meat without having to make up some lame excuse or get funny looks. The fact that I'm not a 'practicing' Catholic is known only to me....and of course my Mother who guilts me about constantly, but retains hope because, hey, I don't eat meat during Lent! ;)

I quit drinking once. That was by far the worst 20 minutes of my life!
Seriously though ... in 1999 I decided I was tired of the direction I was going ... I had a beer-gut, it was
taking more and more alcohol to get me buzzed, and I decided my son (who was 3 at the time) deserved a better role model than a Dad who came home and knocked off a six-pack every night.
Now I come home and run or bike or read or hang-out or whatever, but without alcohol. I've never been to an AA meeting or any shiat like that, but I admire those who decide they need to go that route and have the guts to do it. I haven't had a drop of anything resembling alcohol since July of '99 and don't miss it a bit. I'm in shape, clear-headed and life rocks! Good luck to you ... you can take charge of what you accept into your body ... you can do it!:D

Thats awesome!! My boyfriend is the same way. He hasn't drank since college. He'll have one and thats a BIG maybe one glass of wine at dinner. He just doesn't like the way he makes him feel.

Me on the other hand I like to have a drink here or there. :)

I rather seriously considered giving up bikeforums. Actually, I think I'm going to give up Slashdot and keep Bikeforums.

I also gave up candy, which is incredibly trying for me despite the fact that I do it every Lent, and I'm going to try to find one extra community service activity to take part in.

mmmm... yum yum yum, this Martinelli's is delicious! If I pretend really hard, it's exactly like champagne, or maybe a really fruity beer!

....I'm not going to last till Easter, am I? :D

Better you should chose just one of those to give up or:

you could wake up next to someone really ugly whose name you don't remember and discover that you're married;

you could meet the love of your life and be so doodoo faced drunk and obnoxious that you spoil the golden opportunity of your life.

I know which I'd choose but you have to decide which is best for your soul.

You do know that you can do something nice for Lent as opposed to giving something up. Why is it that the give it up crowd is always bigger and louder than the do something crowd?:fight:

Fo 40 days it will be hard for most for any vice we may have to make a statement like purging our bodys of this item. While I don't think it is possible to give up totally I will try to cuss much less; try not to think of porn as much. I will work toward the total absolution.

Although i am a non-practicing Catholic I still gave up burgers.... So no In-n-Out burgers or patty melts for me! Ugh! I would have given up chocolate but my daughter is selling chocolate for her Kindergarten class. So ya know I have to help her out and buy some from her!!! ;)

I called my Mom Wednesday and the topic of what am I cooking for diner came up and I went on and on about these great steak fajitas I make with avacodo and chipotle and she just laughed and said, "you know today is ash Wednesday right?" I was like, "uhh yea ummm ha ha just kidding I am making fish tacos". LOL

I have not done the lent thing in years though it really is a very good thing to do. Especially if you drink to much and are looking for an excuse to stop :(
