... Do you mean like these wheels (http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile_combo.cfm?SKU=19253&estore_ID=&subcategory_ID=&CFID=57812324&CFTOKEN=32183068)? Or is there another set that is commonly found for sale on the interweb machine that uses Open Pro rims (9 speed Shimano compatibile is a plus)?

Also, what are some other wheelsets that would work well for around $300?

They are a rim and you can get them built up at your local bike shop any way you want.

I realize that, I just figured that there would be something... sportier or something. You know, less spokes or some such thing.

There's always good ol' Shimano 540's or 550's (are these sporty?)- I ran both last season and they've held up well. Someplace online has 550's for under $200.00

I got a set of Open Pro/Ultegras on sale the end of last year. Very happy with them so far.

There are fewer spokes, not less. And what is the point of this thread?

I have had a lot of good turn outs wiht DT swiss hubs ans Velocity Escape or fusion rims this combo gives you a wheel a tad lighter than Mavic Ksyriums

- i have both OPs and a set of 540s... the 540s are pretty bulletproof, but *heavy*...

- my vote is for the OPs w/28 or 32-spoke 105 hubs...

- just my US$0.02...

I know what you mean. I recently replaced a new set of Campy Daytona/Ambrosia wheels with some Zonda's. They are a little lighter but super high on the Bling scale. One of the few parts I bought without regard for practicality, shame on me. The Shimano 500 series seem like they would suit your criteria. Good luck

I realize that the Open pros aren't the sexiest wheels around. But you did place this post in the Cyclocross section, not the "Look at my $$$ Italian Bike/I have too much expendable income" section. Open pros are tried and true. A lot of people race cross on Ksyriums, but they're at least twice as much and pretty much weigh the same. The Shimano 550's are heavy. Around 1950 grams. I don't think they're that great, but they are on sale for like $180 at Excel, Performance, Nashbar.

When you're bike is covered in mud who cares what your wheels look like?

CXP33 on Ultegra hubs...

Never mess with them once they're built...
