I was pleasantly surprised that my local Walgreens (store #07560 in suburban Houston) put in a bike rack upon my suggestion. It took a while, and a few reminders, but it did happen.

Maybe they'd put one in at your local store, too. It nevers hurts to ask.

And if they do it... be sure to thank them for it.

Thanks, Peter. Not only does my Walgreen's have a bike rack, they also allow people on bikes to go through the drive-in prescription window.

There are three stores in my neighborhood for quickie shopping trips. The Walgreens gets most of my business just because it has a bike rack in front. On nice days the bike rack is sometimes full (3 bikes).

You'd think the other two stores would get a clue, especially the convenience store down the block that doesn't have gas pumps.

I can't think of a Walgreens in my city without a bike rack... :D

CVS just built a pharmacy less than a mile from my apartment. I should probably ask them to put a bike rack in, too. The Hy-Vee grocery that was just built in the same area put one in (a ring/post that might hold 3-4 bikes if other cyclists are courteous in how they park) as part of the master plan.

CVS lets me use the drive-up on my bike, too.

I find it interesting, but no particular importance, that Walgreens, Wal-Mart, and McDonald's are three of the very few businesses in this area that have a bike rack. However, just about every business has some type of cigarette butt receptacle.

I think that makes a statement.

We've got a Walgreens with racks, although one is placed very lamely. A local cyclist who is an amazingly good letter writer is trying to convince them to move it (http://bikeportland.org/2007/02/22/how-a-letter-can-lead-to-better-biking/). Bear in mind that more often than not, the bike racks where I live are quite full, and there is always calls/requests/complaints for more.

Oh yeah, that reminds me of another thing that may be worth consideration. The bike racks that I mentioned above are nearly always empty. With the exception of the one in front of McDonald's. It often has one bike in it and it's always the same bike. Probably somebody that works there.

A new Walgrens is going in in my area. I went to the public meetings and they said that they would put the bike rack in, and even add a walk light to the intersection. That I have to see to believe. The amazing thing was that they needed like 60 car spaces for the store. That is a lot of parking for a city zone. They seemed to have issues with building smaller. They really really needed those car spaces.

Try to find out where exactly they plan to install the bike rack. If it's in a crappy location, they might as well not waste their money.

The CVS near me has a bike rack too and I am in the middle of nowhere.

Last drug store I went to, I had to lock up to a bee-infested trash can  I thought about asking about a bike rack... guess it wouldn't have been too crazy after all!
