I'm sure there's been one of these before, but I just wanted to thank coffee for making this morning, and this whole week possible. Coffee, you're the best!

+1 to me for actually getting this post.
I'm sure she stills read all the posts and attempts to moderate and delete them. ;)

The perfect amount ground to perfection in my Capresso Infinity Burr grinder, then plopped into my press pot to be steeped by the freshly boiled (and then backed off boil about 10 degrees) filtered water. Steeped exactly 3 minutes and immediately poured into drinking cups or a thermal carafe to savor later.
Yeah...I likes me some coffee. :D

You're making me very needy of another cup.
I miss Koffee. She wasn't cut out to be a Mod, but she did a LOT of really good posts before things got crazy.
Having gotten that out of the way... I like ze French Press, and those foil one pot bags. You put ze bag in ze press, and voila! You have ze coffee, no?
Of course, finding good coffee in one pot pouches is the tricky part.

The Eastside Blend is pretty good. If you are willing to grind, tamp, swish, swirl and dance a jig BEFORE you have coffee, you can do lots better... but this ain't bad.

Filled with Black Lightning (A dark, bold, but not burned roast I buy from Daily Dose (http://www.myspace.com/dailydoseonline)), ground fresh every morning with my conical burr grinder, mixed with 188 *F water, infused for precisely four minutes, then poured into a nice, clean ceramic mug while inhaling the crisp, eye-opening vapor. Every last drop is savored as a delicacy. Such a perfect, awakening beverage commands the highest respect.

188F is too cold. It needs to be about 195-200F.
Unfortunately, 188F is the hottest water I can get without shuffling water from one goblet to another. As you can imagine, my stainless steel star****s press (a Bodum brand press with Star****s engraved in it... Can you tell I don't like star****s?) would not fare well in the microwave.
When using hotter water, I reduce the amount of infusion time. My method does make a pefect cup of coffee, though. Yes, I am aware that more thorough extraction would happen at a higher temperature and that there's no substitute for it (not even an extra minute in the press). such is life.
You should see the disgraceful swill that my peers attempt to call "Coffee", though.

Folgers Classic Roast and Mr. Coffee machine. Spoon what looks to be close to right amount of dried brown flakes into basket. Pour in some water. Hit green button. Wait for it to hit whatever is the perfect temp for model CG12. When gurgling sounds stop coming from break room, go in and pour cup of coffee. Add sugar, go back to desk and surf foo.

Java is actually not just another name for coffee (just learned this recently).
Java is an Indonesian island and the name given to designate Indonesian coffee. Just like Mocha is the name given to Yemen coffee and has nothing to do with chocolate.

I burr grind and french press every morning, but I go with a 4 minute steep and about 200 degree water. I also tend to use heaping scoops instead of level. I like my coffee strong in flavor but low in acid. I've been buying my beans from Midtown Marketplace here in Eugene (former Triomphe). They're house and sumatra are both very good.
I can't (won't) do the drip machine stuff, it's too much acid and not enough flavor. I'd rather skip a cup than drink that stuff, it's gut rot in a cup.
For those of you who haven't tried a press, give it a go. The coffee is stronger in flavor and much, much smoother. It's the only method of coffee brewing I can comfortably put on an empty stomach. Those of you with high cholesterol should note that press coffee, for whatever reason, is higher in cholesterol than other brewing methods. I'm not sure where I heard that, but I'll try to find a source.

Mocha is named after the port at Mocha, but Yemen coffee is said (I agree) to have a slight chocolatey aftertaste. But the name "mocha" is not so named because of anything to do with chocolate.
That being said....Peet's Mocha Java is one of my favorite coffees.

I have an expreso machine and a burr grinder. You are suicidal to get between me and the first two cups. After that I am a little more civilized and you are only a masochist if you get between me and the machine...

If it tastes good this way, that's great but FYI, if you cool the water down a bit, it'll be even smoother, as you're likely over-extracting the brew at 4 minutes. Using some extra grounds might be buffering it a bit though.
I've often found that the "rote" best practices ways of doing coffee can often be improved upon due to variances in personal taste. Coffee, in growing, roasting, grinding, and brewing, is an art, not a hard science.
I frequently "mess with" my routine. I try a finer ground, a different coffee from one of my "coffee snob" friends, a longer or shorter infusion time, a different temperature, and other stuff, just to see if I can do anything to finish that last mile of perfection.
It took me a whole week, and nearly half a pound of ground coffee beans (and a few cups of coffee only half-consumed) to land the winning combo I've got that became my "daily grind" so to speak. I prefer to grind my beans right before brewing, but I don't feel like having an expensive grinder stolen from my cubicle so I bring a day's worth of coffee grounds with me in an airtight container.

This is very true.....there is a such thing as steeping too long. The last flavors to come out of the bean are bitter flavors. Many times bitterness comes from steeping too long.

I still have an old el cheapo Wal-Mart one...but one day want to get a good one. I have been drooling over this one lately.

I'll play around with the method. I know sometimes I'm impatient with the water temp and I can taste it. I usually only drink one cup a day, first thing in the morning (I used to drink more, but it got out of hand). In the morning I just go with what works. Before the cup of coffee I don't think clearly enough to mess with the cup of coffee, know what I mean?

I usually don't make espresso at home, but when I do I use a simple stove top (http://www.espressozone.com/bialetti-7857.html) maker. So far I haven't used it enough to really get the method down. I think I use too much heat. In all I just prefer the press, so I haven't been that motivated to use the espresso machine.

Although I work at the perfect cup...I'm with you about one cup a day now (except weekends).
I used to drink way too much...I justify it as quality over quantity. For me, it's not about the caffeine, its about the flavor. If I have less, I can savor it better as a "treat".
I usually press two "Big" cups of coffee a day at work. But, I also end up drinking a mountain dew about twice a week on top of that. Also, a healthy dose of cheesy 90's dance music helps wake me up. Nothing like some Real McCoy or Ace of Base to kick off the day.

My thoughts exactly. One cup a day makes it seem like a real treat. I also find with just one cup in the morning and no caffeine after lunch I sleep better at night and I'm less tired throughout the day.

Ode to the Bean
Oh the joy that you are
Lingering bittersweet on my lips
You awaken my mind
You heighten my senses
With your smooth dark velvet
And rich lustre
Your scent fills my head
Intoxicating at first hint
Bring me back to life
Stimulate me
Surge through me
Entice me with your taste
Oh sweetness divine
On tongue do you tango
Hence you slip away
Bidding me to count the hours
In which I can experience you
Once again
Ode to the Bean

Coffee is the tool of the devil I tell you.
HA... this was claim was put to rest over 400 years ago by Pope Clement VIII (http://www.answers.com/topic/pope-clement-viii):
"Coffee aficionados claim that the spread of its popularity is due to Pope Clement VIII's influence. Being pressured by his advisers to declare coffee the "bitter invention of Satan" because of its popularity among Muslims, he instead declared that, "This devil's drink is so good... we should cheat the devil by baptizing it." It is not clear whether this is a true story."
You say that like it's a bad thing? <perplexed KT look>

Why do you disrespect me so much and insult me all the time KT? It's not cool. I'm sick of people calling me a boy. It's just rude. I can crack any jokes I'd like about coffee, and I'd hardly consider it a grown up drink. I know 13 year old kids who drink it.
