Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. I'd much rather have hub shifting than reg shifting! and with todays technology hub shifting can be refind. A better idea would be to put the hub shifter at the crank rather than the rear wheels, this way it can be built larger and more durable. That would look real cool with one of those chopper bikes, because it would look like a small motor.:D

I told ya Im a car guy!!!!:D

They still make 'em and they're even more high-tech than before. One hub is made by ROHLOFF and has 14 speeds. Check the 'net for more info......

Yup... those are the offerings...

Rohloff is an impressive piece of hardware that is being used with great success by off-road tandem teams and there is a disc-compatible model. The down side is weight and the need to slightly modify your riding style. However, gone is the front derailleur and extra chain rings, mud-boged cassettes and rear derailleurs. The weight penalty is fairly easy to absorb in a 40 - 50lb off-road tandem but might be a harder pill to swallow (along with the $800 price tag) for single bike users.

For the comfort/commuter/recreational users, Shimano offers a 4 speed model and Shimano and SRAM have both developed 7 speed internal hubs -- as noted by MichaelW -- along with the latest 3, 5 & 7 speed offerings from Sturmey Archer which also offers models with internal, hub drum brakes:

That's been the next big trend for 10+ years-found an old Mountain Bike Action from 92 talking about how the derailleur was dead and that internally geared hubs were where it's at.
