Vanilla Ice cream+pistachios=pistachio ice cream.

I had someone get some pics of me tasting it, but I look like I'm on death's door from being sick and somehow it looks like my eyes are going in different directions.

Never had the stuff myself, but I think botto is right, "traditional" pistachio is green with less chunkage.

Haagen Daaz is run of the mill ice cream. The maker thought up an exotic name to make it seem exceptional. It aint exceptional.

Certainly not as good as hand-cranked homemade. But I'm lazy. And run-of-the-mill. And don't like anything in ice cream that doesn't belong. I do likes me my HD, but, then again, I don't eat very much of it, not very often. Sweets just aren't my thing. But spicy? Salty? That's another story. :D

Hmmm, I don't eat ice cream, so I'm unsure of the ingredients. But if HD is considered superior, so be it. :)

Bryer's makes the best pistachio ice cream IMO. Edy's is a good second place if Bryer's is not availible in plain Pistachio in your area.

H-D is good stuff, but IMO overrated.

Because of this thread, tonight I went out and bought my very first half gallon of pistachio ice cream.

Please be gentle with me...I'm a virgin. I am sitting here looking at two scoops of it in a bowl...

After my last post I went down and ate half of the pistachio ice cream. I flipped the carton around and noticed that little thing has over a 1000 calories. So then I freaked and put it back. I think I just gained half a pound. Great.

Well, not really, especially when you compare it to what was on the market when it came out. Ben & Jerry's did not exist then. Steve's did not exist then, nor did Emak & Bolio's nor any other super-premiums. Haagen Dazs made all of them possible. It made people realize that you could do better than Baskin-Robbins (then the gold standard) and way better than what you got a Thrifty Drug or Carvel. The secret? Tons more butter fat and tons less air. It was pretty much that simple.

As for the lack of color in the Pistachio, I'll betcha it's because the green Pistachio ice creams use (gasp) artificial coloring. Haagen Dazs doesn't. (Same thing is true of green "mint chip" ice creams - without additives, they would be white.)

Tofutti is actually damn good! :) I had a most divine chocolate cake a while ago that was completely vegan, with tofu in the ingredients. It is most excellent in desserts. :)

wtf? I can't find bryer's or Edy's pistachio anywhere. I have some pistachio ice cream in the freezer. good good stuff. I can't resist it.

Has anyone else ever had Dole Whip? I've never seen it sold in stores, which is probably a good thing.

I still have most of a half gallon left. I'm the only one who will eat it. Such a sacrifice, but I think I'm up for the challenge, two scoops at a time.

I wanna try a different brand. Haagen daz doesn't taste like anything.

But then again, nothing has any taste for me lately. Damn cold.
