General Cycling Discussion - Trek 2002 1200D Road Bike

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Hello, can anyone give me any feedback on the above model of bike. I'm thinking of getting one and the cost is @$1000. It has the following spec:
FRAME Oversized Alpha™ Aluminum creates a stiff, lightweight frame made for speed and quick handling.
FORK Carbon straight blade w/alloy steerer.
WHEELS Alex AT450 rims with Bontrager Select tires are lightweight and reliable.
COMPONENTS Suntour Superbe crank and Shimano Tiagra/HG-50 9-speed shifting. Triple or double chainring.
Thanks.
Oy, that's ridiculously overpriced, especially for last year's model. Specialized's Allez Sport is around $850 with full Tiagra, a carbon fork, and a carbon seatpost. It's also got the same A1 frame they use on their $1700 bike.
I thought so too ... look around, and if you really like the bike, go back with your research and see if you can knock it down a few hundreds.
Maybe this shop is trying to sell him on it as being made in the USA or something (can't come up with any other justification unless there's no other shops for miles)-there's a big difference these days between Treks with the "Made in the USA" stickers and those with the "Built in the USA" ones.
But 1200s aren't made in the US, are they? I thought they were made in Taiwan, like their low end MTBs.
I'm actually from the UK and so you have to bear in mind that the price is based on that.
Is there a big difference as to whether bikes are built in the US or not?
I guess the important thing is the quality of the frame?
Does anyone know how light the frame is?
Chi-yeah, that was my point there. Treks with the "built in the usa" sticker are just that-made in Taiwan by Giant, and then shipped over here for preliminary assembly. By their logic, I could slap a similar sticker on all the bikes at our shop.
There is not a big difference between bikes built in the USA and those that are not. As an example, the Raleighs we carry got cheaper and increased in quality when they moved manufacturing to Taiwan.
That frame is not light-even their 2200 weighs about 19 pounds, and that's a lighter alloy. That complete bike should weigh in about 21-23 pounds as a rough guesstimate.
