Training & Nutrition - Training and having a cold

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I have come down with a sinus type cold - you know the type, sniffling running nose, headache, all-around blah feeling. Could use some rest, but I haven't ridden in two nights. I have a 20mile training ride tomorrow with my Team In Training group, will I be OK , or will it kick my butt so I can't make it to work on Monday? I guess this is a silly question, but it will be in the 20s and 30s with 16mph winds.
Bottom line is it OK to train through these little illnesses. I think I used to do that when I was running in college and it sometimes helped shake the bug.

My rule is that it's OK when I'm starting to get better, but not when I'm still getting worse. In fact, a 4 hour rain ride is my favorite medicine. Fixes me right up. Keep the HR down, though. Zones 2 and 3. Drink lots. Sweat lightly.

Rule of thumb that I've read here (i.e., not a doctor): throat and above, generally okay to ride -- don't expect to feel great or be 100%, but you'll be okay; below the throat (lungs), stay off bike. However... with that weather, take the extra day off!

+1, i tried riding with a fairly bad chest infection, made it a lot worse. i ride with head colds a lot though.
i like to take a small painkiller for the headache, as when my heart gets pumping it makes the headache worse. but stay away from stuff like dayquil. I rode while on dayquil once and thought i was gonna have a heart attack. I'd take like 1 or 2 advil depending on how my head feels.
