Foo - The Fooster Class Project

I have $100.

The Mission: take that money and build the best utility bike I can possibly build. Something that I can ride almost anywhere and people will say, "Hey, cool bike." Kind of like Monster Garage for bikes.

Here's our subject. It's a 1995 Trek 950 that's been sitting in a friend's garage for most of those 12 years. He took a job out of state and left a bunch of stuff behind, including the bike. I gave him $25 for it.

Here's my charge to Foo Nation: What should I do with it? Aside from the cleaning and tuning (I'm not counting that in the budget), what will make the most of this bike? I've got $75 left.

most functional bang for buck if you are commuting, street riding, trail riding would be slicks or something with a strong central ridge. Most impact would be color. Colored cable housings, colored seat cover, no need to replace seat, colored grips, colored toe straps. I think red or hot pink if you can find them all, if not, get some plastic paint and paint what you can, housings, straps, maybe even seat.

new cables, new saddle, and rattle-can paintjob. The rest is still too usable to just throw out....

They are pretty near mint. I don't think he rode it all that much. I thought it was a steal, too.

Get a rack thing to put on the back, a good sized cooler, and spend the remaining money on beer and some ice. Then ride around and hand out beers to people. They will like your bike.

For a more serious answer...new saddle, pedals, maybe some fenders and racks?

Who gives two sheets what OTHER people think? It your bike, it's about what YOU think. For $25 you did great! A little time on C, L, & A and you've got a rider.

My $10 'Sally' bike needed two tires & tubes and a fork rebuilld which added another $75 to the total. For ease and accuracy of fork airing, I added an Air Fork Balance kit from Progresssive Suspension, another $30, to bling it up (because I liked it) I put a smiley face schrader cap in the fork air fill port, it's mate I modded and hung under the seat facing rearward another $7. For my arse I'm looking at getting a Brooks, price TBD. Heh, I almost forgot the $15 bar tape.

All this was done because I liked it, I thought it was 'cool'. What anyone else thinks... fark 'em! I don't care. It ain't their bike, it ain't their money. :)

with $75, i think you're going to have to concentrate on sanding, painting, finish to buy some "wow" factor.

I don't think I'd bother with SS on that, but maybe that's because I've never tried an SS MTB. Still, I think I'd rather spend the money on a nice saddle!
