Advocacy & Safety - 20/20 Scared Stiff

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Anyone watch the show last night?
Is the popular sentiment about being "scared stiff" unintentionally hamstringing Americans?
I didn't know Stossell was a cycle commuter.

yeah, and i thought the 'researcher's test was biased.
I saw, when they showed the reseacher riding without a helmet, he was also using ortliebs, making his bike appear wider from behind. when he rode with the helemt, he wasn't using the panniers. BIAS.
i know i get passed closer without panniers than when running a full load.
I also noticed there was a bike lane on Manhattan island :) that was clear of motor traffic, and a lot of other bicyclists. when they showed john stossel without a bike lane, i saw no other cyclists.

Yeah, but just like in the exodus to the roads in place of flying post 9/11, more americans died due to their fears.
Are Americans unjustly fearful of cycling?

maybe he should have studied 3' passing safety flags versus not, both while wearing a helmet.
the "research" was flawed, the study biased.
glad to see it furthered your rallying cry of the empty drumbeats for helmetless riding, closet.
I found the footage of bike lanes on Manhattan, with bicyclists in them, much more interesting than the biased 'helemt study' footage.

back off the myopic tunnel vission bek. Move onto different concepts. You're points are as bad as examples in the show. What about the idea that the exercise from riding the bike is what "safe" is?

Let's move the discussion over here (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=271944). Normally, this should be in Advocacy & Safety, but they've got such a productive and civil discussion going on over there, I don't want to disrupt them.
