if i posted a few pics of a frame (i think its an american made schwinn) would anyone be able to identify it for me? does anyone know how to "translate" the numbers on the bottom side of the crankcase? fast eddie outty

How old is the bike, Fast Eddie? You might want to ask over at Classic & Vintage if it's an older bike.

i dont think its very old, it takes a 1 1/8" fork stem, and from the bearing cups im pretty sure it used the newer kind of crank set. from what i can tell it was originally a really cool metalic red, but it looks like someone stole it at some point cuz the numbers under the bottom bracket have either been ground off or puttied over, i wont be abe to tell which till i blast it - and it was painted that hideous green with some lame looking stickers that i did it the favor of removing. the welds are all original and in great shape, and the rear drop outs are a more solid design than any other bmx frame ive had. its full 20+ inch top tube so its a lil longer than the park bikes. its gonna make a great gravity speed bike. someone told me it was a schwinn and that it was built in america, but i dont knw how he could tell, any help anyone? hers pics.

Take the serial number off the bb and e-mail it to Schwinn?
East Hill

Actually, Eddie, if you give us the serial number we might be able to check it out for you...but you are correct, it's not an older bike. It sure looks sturdy, though :D .

Looks like a Schwinn Scrambler, but i've been wrong before!

I think the dropouts are wrong, if I recall correctly the dropouts on the Scramblers were reversed.
But then I have also been wrong...

i'll leave it at "It's a Schwinn ??????"
It looks like a Schwinn emblem on the dropout.
It just looks like a newer-version of the Scrambler I had in High School.

True or not...he asked what model it was not how good it is...

im not trying to be sarcastic when i ask this...but why is it a peice of s**t? i hear alot of bmxers at the park saying good and bad things about different bikes but - as in your post - i never hear any elaboration as to why. i dont bmx so i dont know a good frame from a bad one. someone mentioned that dropouts are wrong, can someone explain what is wrong about them? also, is "scambler" a model of schwinn? i got an apporximate date for the bike, but he also said he's pretty sure it wasnt made in america. the frame is straigt, all he weldsare good, there is no distortion that i can see, the assembly of the tubes is sturdier than most of the park/trick frames i see around, is there anything else is should be looking for? fast eddie outty

oops...I said 'Scrambler' and I meant Predator...was I wrong (in both of my posts...I had scrambler on the brain thinking about old Schwinn BMX bikes).
The Scrambler was one of (if not THE) first true BMX bike Schwinn made (please correct me if I'm wrong), later replaced by the Predator (the actual bike I had in high school...i'm old but not THAT old). The frame LOOKS (and looks sometimes are deceiving) more like the Schwinn Falcon (but I can't find any good pictures to confirm).

The dropouts are ridiculous, for starters.

tell me more about the drop outs mcmahon, if there is something i should know but dont then i would like to be informed.
im familiar with metal fabrication so drawing from what i know of that...this is what i see.....the seat stays and chain stays are not straight, they're bent. this makes them stronger and they'll have less "flex" in any direction than a bike whos same tubes are straight. the more bends in a frames tubing, the more expensive and time consuming to manufacture as opposed to straight tubes. the chain and seat stay tubes were not cut at a 90 degree angle for welding to the drop outs, they were cut at less of an angle making for more surface area between stay tubes and dropouts-thus a better stonger bond. the top tube, seat tube, and seat stay are all welded to eachother, again, more surface area to be welded making for a better/stronger bond, and more expensive to manufacture because the cutting requires more tooling than just a cut off wheel to make 90 degree cuts. this looks like a machine made to take a
beating and not fail
of course none of this translates to riding or racing, but since i plan to make this frame weigh arond 25-30 pounds before its even built, i look for strength first in the frames i pick up. educate me mccmahon. is the frame justa peice of s@@t because yours is better or do you really know what your talking about? fast eddie outty
he knows what he's taking about.
and what are you planning to do with it?

mcmahon - again you didnt answer so i will assume you dont have one. its easier to take a lil jab at someone w/ a graphic than it is to actually know something. ive done some posting w/ this at other forums and got a few answers from builders/riders who have real knowledge on the subject rather than after school park banter, but thanx for the chix pix anyway.
as far as what im gonna do w/ it for the person who asked...this will be modified to be a gravity bike. bmx frames are cheap and they have a low profile so they lend themselves to experiment and mods more easy and less expensive than other types of frames. i will be filling the down tube w/ a mix of lead birdshot and fiberglass resin to make it faster, and will weld on some different peices for the "conversion." as with my other g-bikes, it will end up going up to 65 mph, faster if i can find a better mountain w/ a days drive of kansas city. not as cool as whatever mcmahon does im sure, but speed is my vice. fast eddie outty

Fast Eddie, when you get done, will you be posting that in the Alt Bikes? It sound cool to me, perhaps you need to move to WA or CO or somewhere where you can go down some big hills...

Heavier things don't go downhill faster... They might stick to the road better, but you need suspension too.

east hill, i posted a pic of a bike i finished last weekend on the alt bike thread, i bolted those barbells on but im hoping to make a new project a little "cleaer" looking. check out www.gravitybike.com for some cool pics of high end bikes.
madman, im not trying to be argumentative, but ill write this for the benefit ofanyone reading that may be interested in gravity sports. heavier things go down the hill faster. when i first started i thought that the "a golf ball and bowling ball hit the ground at the same time when dropped) applied but it doesnt. two bikes of identical weight and componentry, ridden by 2 riders of identical skill levels, one 150 pounds and one 200 pounds, the heavier rider will win. this is common knowledge in gravity sports. there were issues about the rules a few years back because rider weight was not calculated, on the maximim weight of the bike, and the riders always "weight up" the bike to as close as the ruled maximum as possible. suspension is "iffy," we ride smooth courses so its not necessary for shock absorption, and suspension "absorbs" speed in turns so many riders run rigid front ends and maybe a steering dampener. a heavy bike w/ a road stem with a negative degree angle keeps steady, and sticking to the road is the job of the rubber in this instance. fast eddie outty
