Touring - Lets be careful out there!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Talking to the local State Department of Roads Supervisor, he told me about a Canadian cycler who was found on the road unconcious last Friday by a DOR employee. I guess the guy was laying on the side of the road, still clipped to his bike. The DOR guy had some water, and started cooling the biker down, and then a farmer stopped, and they put the fellow in the air conditioned pickup. The rider recovered, and continued on his trip. The temperature was in the lower 100's, and he was working a lot of hills.
Today, with a temp of 103 and humidity of 60+%, it would be easy to get into trouble. I only rode 7 miles, and maintained an easy spin, and consumed an entire oversized bottle of water!
Lets all be careful out there! Don't let the heat get you!!
Great advice, Nebill.
I thought this thread was going to be about watching out for cars and said to myself, "heck, these days the heat is more of a threat than cars".
Sure enough, you said it.
The word is that we can expect to see summers get hotter and longer as the world continues to heat up.
I hope Bush's oil doesn't dry up soon. We'll need the fuel to generate power for our air conditioners.

Don't worry--there's still plenty of wildlife reserves and National Parks to drill in. :D
Nebill, I am drinking 20-24 ounces of water every 6-7 miles, too--when I'm good. I try to remember to drink at every stop light but today I didn't think to until I'd already been going for 25 minutes.

It's also imperative to keep the water consumption up both before and after the ride. It's not just about drinking while you ride, you need a good reserve supply as well. Eating lots of fruit can also help in this area.
