I have put together the dura ace barend shifters per the instructions and am curious. I dont have the cables attached to them yet but as they are mounted into the handle bars, should the levers be able to move as if they were shifting.

Right now after ive tightened the screws that hold the lever into the bosses the levers feel like they are locked into some notches. I dont understand how they are going to shift if the levers feel like they are locked. Am I missing something here.

The instructions are pretty lame in my opionion.

Does anyone have a good understanding of how to set these up?

When installed the left one should be fairly stiff so it does not move and change the der. position while riding, the right one will go thru a number of clicks one less than the number of gears, also stiff. They are pretty hard to install incorrectly

I've made the same mistake you face, the problem is that they are not starting at the first detent. You have installed them as if they were in the 5th or 9th gear instead of the 1st gear.

Take the shifter off the base and rotate 1/4 a turn, then reattach to base and try again. Keep doing this until you can count the correct number of detents as you move it.
